    Ancient Bear

The spring bear season was a long one. I sat 12 days, and the last sit was 13 hours before I had an opportunity at this ancient bear. His hid was thick, teeth worn, and his paws were old and leathery.

I have pics, but can't seem to upload them?

    Great hunt !

while I differ and have 0 interest in hunting over bait, it is nice to be able to be so selective and confident that there are no Cubs with baiting.

Each to their own, my dad has done it once with me. He never did see a big one, but I could tell he just wasn't into it. In Manitoba it's basically the only way to have a reasonable chance of success in spring. We don't have clear-cuts or any elevation to even consider a chance at spot and stalk. Fall time you can sit corn or oats fields but those are few and far between in good bear country. I've hunted Vancouver Island many years ago, and that was a ton of fun. Hunting over bait can be very boring and mentally exhausting and physically hard on the arse, ha!

I like hunting bears, and will do it anyway I can. Spot and stalk is definitely more go, go, go. Maybe next spring I'll get out there before I no longer have the chance to hunt BC, folks might move to MB.

Hunted many bears over bait in Quebec. Only way to go there...
Setting up baits was lots of hard work - no quads in those days.
In between long waits and the blackflies, it can be very exciting !

What a brute! That's a heck of a commitment for a true trophy.

BTW: As you were describing your bear, I couldn't help think of Nog - "...this ancient bear. His hide was thick, teeth worn, and his paws were old and leathery."
