    Sunday Hunt 2-17

Had to work Saturday but made it a priority to get out yesterday in an area of 2-17 that I like to hunt for blacktails and bears. Gorgeous day, but man was I ever surprised to see how little green grass there was. Maybe I was too high in elevation at about 2500ft. Actually got stopped at about 3000ft with waist high snow drifts on a old quad trail that still hadn't melted and had to explore elsewhere. Did not see too much sign except for near the one area that did have some grass patches that had been eaten. Other than that, in this area of 2-17 it was still a tad early for bears. Hummingbirds were humming all over the place and never heard so many grouse before - they sounded like they were all over the place. So maybe it might be a good year for grouse. Actually stumbled upon 3 Blue Grouse and holy cow they spook the sh_t out of me every time! Man was it ever nice to get back out there - so good for the soul. Will try again in a different region next weekend I think

I found the same in 2-19. Saw a beauty boar but it was still quite brown.

Looks like the bear stepped in his own scat.

2500-3000 ft might be a bit high, though I don't know that particular area. If I had to toss out an average for Region 2, I would go with 0 to 1800ft at this time. Was there better grass down lower?

Ya I think you might be right ha! There was nothing solid coming out of that bear's rear end. And yes there was plenty of grass along the hwy as I was driving home once I got say ~1500ft and lower. Too bad I ran out of time (always the case)

That belongs to Poopfoot. That's the Bigfoot's less hygienic cousin.

I’m not in zone 2, but am spotting most of my bears between 1100-1400M, most likely exactly where the snow was a week or two ago..

slowest bear season by far though, five outings and have came across 20 bears, that might seem like a lot but there are days last year I’d see double digits in one day! I feel like where I usually hunt we are 2-3 weeks behind on free up, usually I go higher by the end of May but I’ll likely be staying mid elevation.

had a little run 4-5 foot chocolate boar growl and bluff charge me today from about 15 yards, was actually hillarious.

Well keep us updated. Good post too. I like it when posts take us along. A pic or two and a report. Stuff like this gets me through the week. Need to be back outside!

I found the same thing in 4-9 on my turkey hunt. Tons of Grouse drumming. My second Weimaraner arrives in a few weeks so it will be a good year for training with lots of birds to point and flush.
If we’re not supposed to eat animals, how come they’re made out of meat?
