Looking at options for the smaller lakes, thinking of a $100 kids inflatable but maybe something more substantial is better
Rigid kayak would be too much for the trails so??

Check out Germany. They may have some surplus Nazi U- boat’s available!
For small lakes go with a u-boat. For bigger water or rivers go with a pontoon.
U boats are easier to get into.
Small lakes tend to have no shoreline! so getting in can be hard.
Plus, you can pack down a float tube quite small.
And yes, on craigslist, you can find great deals all the time.
I want a U boat!
Seriously, I've had so much fun with my Intex kayaks that I've ordered a Sea Eagle 420 whitewater kayak. They work for everything as long as you don't stab holes in them while fishing.

True, but i have seen my fair share of folks in kayaks take a bath also.
Then your day trip is over til you find some dry clothes.
Belly boats still have there purposes, imo.
You could get one of the large 4-6 person inflatable with floor boards.
They are pretty stable.
You can get a motor mount and you could have a nice little fun device for lakes.
You have to spend at least 3-4 hundred.

I like the seat position of something like the Fishcat , higher compared to a round tube
Found a frameless pontoon boat is made, more compact and good high position too, maybe better rowability? .
I have the 8' punt and the 14 ' aluminum, so that end is covered

Whatever you decided, skip the kayak.
You want your hands free to fish.
I love my pontoon boat for drifting rivers but prefer a belly/u-boat for more control my fly in still water.
