Can’t beat a havalon. Nothing to look at but I carry a fixed blade that’s prettier haha. The havalon is just insane for skinning

Until my son bought me one I always used my Buck Vanguard. Not top of the line but once sharp it would do a whole moose if used right, but now I've got the Havalon OMG that thing is unreal. It's a must. I use my vanguard for splitting joints now not much else!
Take a kid hunting its more rewarding than shooting an animal yourself!!

So another question would be-I assumes a fixed blade to be what you’d use for skinning-is it?

I’m a big fan of the morakniv knives. They are cheap and hold an edge very well and come in vibrant colours so they are harder to misplace.

S30v steel antler handle made by floyd ternier. Great knife.

OLately i find myself carrying my leatherman and a havalon. But if i were to only carry one it would be the one i listed above.

Where do you find these? I couldn’t easily find a site to buy them from when I searched Floyd ternier.

He had a table at a local gun show years ago, that's where I got it from.

I’m assuming you’re looking for a gift for someone special. Check out the grohman line. Made in pictou, Nova Scotia. I think it’s called their number one, they claim(and many others on this site) to be a great trapping and hunting knife. I think you can get some custom options for handles. My brother had the small Skinner and it’s the nicest Shape to fit my hand of all the knives I’ve tried. Four options for skinning knives, I’m sure they’re all good.

It’s hard to beat a havalon though. Not the nicest feel, but razor sharp and when it gets dull, you just pop another blade in.

There’s plenty of smaller shops or custom guys in bc and Alberta who make one-of-a-kind stuff too if you want something really special.
