.300 win mag ammo for newbie

Getting ready to spend a day this weekend sighting in my .300. I know that you want to sight in using the ammo you’re going to use while hunting. But where does a guy start choosing a bullet? Mainly hunting deer, elk, possibly bear.

Is a flatter trajectory better for beginners? 180gr? Soft point? I realize there’s no true one-and-done bullet, but just trying to find a starting point

In all reality, any brand or type of bullet should suffice. Millions of animals were harvested before the invention of monolith, pure copper, controlled expansion bullets. Start with the cheap stuff, get used to shooting the gun and getting accurate.

Heavier bullets tend to kick more (it's physics ), so if you are recoil sensitive, go lighter.

The difference in trajectory is fairly negligible at shorter ranges (say 200 yards and under).

Every brand tends to shoot different, so don't assume that Winchester 150's will pattern the same as Remington 150's.

Find a brand that you can shoot well, stick with it. Hunt and then depending on the results of shooting at a game animals, THEN you can start exploring different bullets, if you feel the need.

Barnes or vortex monolithics, Tsx or TTsx 165 or 180 gr will work well from your 300 win mag. I shot blue box federals for years before I started with premium ammo, 180 gr soft point. Went through many a moose deer and bear!! Moosin

You hear lots of marvelous things about premium loads using premium bullets, but after handloading Nosler Partitions for my 300 Win. Mag using my buddy's loading gear, when he quit doing it I bought some plain-Jane Winchester Super-X silver box 180 grain loads and they ended up being more accurate than the handloads.

As mentioned above, Federal blue boxes are popular too.

Yeah I know but the price was right. Honestly surprised I made it this long without a comment like this. And it won’t be my only firearm either. Wanted something to get going on everything this year for my first season. And sighting in with buddies that are way more experienced.
