Oh yes, wieners will get you amazing results.
A very, very good Agility Competitor we knew reminded us that treats are banned in competition but wink, wink said that the smell does linger on your fingers for quite awhile.

Ha ha,,,,I've heard about that maneuver myself, John. Heard it's very effective during the off leash healing portion of a hunt test. Handle some greasy wieners before hand and the dog is glued to your side. Too funny!

Did a batch of these the other day. My puppy loves them. Leave a bit out at a time and keep the rest in the fridge or they will go bad. Once in the fridge they keep for weeks.

It's a nasty rumour, I would never accuse the Good Wife of using such a devious method to get a "Q".

My last Brit responded better to physical appreciation where as her mother preferred high value treats instead and they basically had the same DNA proving they were different from each other even though they spent a fair bit of their lives together. You just never know what works best so you use both methods to show your appreciation for a task well done.

I always give verbal praise and a back rub to my griff but it's truly those deer, moose, and goose treats that's icing on top of the cake for her. I have no problems getting/making my treats for free so cost is not an issue. I hear the high value treats purchased in pet shops can be really pricey.

I've only ever owned female bird dogs. Perhaps males respond differently but I doubt it,,,,each dog has its own identity as to what means more to them. I really don't think one method of positive reinforcement is any better than the other. Just my opinion of course.
Sorry MC but dogs are not like humans, we the owners can indeed shape and think of them them that way. facts are dogs are not foodies or food driven, they are what we make them. Sure you can make them food driven if you choose, My dogs will not react to treats because they have never been used as a bribe. If you start a pup so they learn attention and praise is the greatest reward then that is what will stimulate them, if you reward/treat with food you condition them to expect treats as reward. A pup is just a pup, a dog is what you make them.

As Foxton says, Who's a gooooooodboy, that's all mine get while training, but later in the day when he has been a good a good boy might be a different thing.

"A dog is what you make them" so true Fox. I can't stand seeing people "humanize" their dogs. An old friend used to say "you're just a dog and that's all you will ever be". We all have our ways in how we raise/treat our animals.

Using food or toys to motivate and reward a dog in training has nothing to do with humanizing a dog.The reason dogs hunt is for food.

Re: Dog training treats,,,,what's your preference??

Dog training studies have shown that dogs can be trained faster using treats than praise or physical attention alone. That being said, weaning your pup/dog off them or just using treats sporadically is a good idea so the dog doesn't expect them every time they follow a command and to go more with other forms of positive reinforcement like verbal praise and physical attention otherwise the dog may.

When I think of humanizing a dog I'm thinking of dogs being dressed up, sitting at a table to eat, etc. My griff watches the tv all the time when WILD TV is on because she likes to watch deer, elk, or moose, bear, flying upland or waterfowl, etc. but I've had nothing to do with that human past time. Haha
