Re: Super Pigs - Feral Hogs Invading Canada

Firstly, ever seen a Russian Boar.
They can survive winters no problem.
Some parts of Germany, the climate is very similar to ours, and they survive, no problem.
They eat "everything! so no issue with food!

    As to hunt them:
Do it like my hunts i had in Germany.
30 ft up, in well built stand, fully enclosed, fully carpeted, and windows the you raise up when needed.
BAIT THEM!, they like corn and even "strudels" from the baker, or bread that they throw out.

BUT, we would need a change in laws, to hunt them at night. (in Germany, most hunts are done in Full Moon, and no lights allowed)
They don't allow "pit lamping", but they are invasive, so "why not".

And yes, they would be a bad deal for our Agriculture for sure.
Thus in Germany, there is a good bond between hunter and farmer.
And there are "big expectations" by their ministry that hunters
"have to take at the very least, a minimum amount per year"
If not, they find another group of hunters.

The true wild boars of Europe and asia are very different then the ones you'll find in north America. While a few are escaped Boars from game farms, the vast majority are interbred with domestic stock and are Feral Pigs.

The big Eurasian Boars would probably do alright here if they could outlast our predators.

Virtually impossible to compare the predator levels in Europe and the 'stans to north america. Europeans have long since decimated wolves, bears, and big cats on their continent.

Well, even domesticated pigs, when becoming Feral, go from virtually no hair, to start regrowing them when left to the wild.
    I think they can adapt.
Granted, they may be better off in a mild climate, at first!
But, if they were to get going, several generations later, i bet you you could see them going further north.

And granted, i agree, the stories are blown out of proportion here.
Just speaking "as if" they were on the rise etc.

Never seen a pig when I am out, however if one were ever to see one what are the rules on giving it a lead injection? On crown land, I am sure if it’s private property it just means permission from the owner of said property

the hunting regs say that feral pigs are "schedule-C" class. no closed season. no bag limit. BUT you must make sure you are hunting on crown land, or private land with permission, and that the pigs are not clearly from a farmer. so if you just shoot an escaped pig that got out....not allowed. farmer's reaction may vary... a big hairy wild pig, giv'r any time.
