if you inspect the rub closely there's a good chance of finding hair stuck to the trunk. then you'll have a better idea of what creature did the work. Any other sign nearby? droppings? scat? tracks?
i haven't seen too many bear rubs that have the bark removed like that, mostly just the bark rubbed to a smooth shiny finish.
i'd put money down that it's an elk rub.

Deer usually rub smaller trees than that one (i have seen them that size tho) and not as high off the ground
