Rattling and grunt tubes work in the rut. Komerrdeer (sp) works perfectly to stop deer on the move and sometimes they will turn around and come back... blow it very gently to sound like a fawn but keep your wits about you because I've also had bears come running!

    Re: Deer calls

I have one that I bought in the states about 30 years a go that sounds just like any mule deer that I heard grunting and I can't remember the brand name, sorry. Whitetails and Blacktails like it too. And I never leave home without it.

cmeer deer call for a communication bleat I use all season. It draws a deers curiosity enough to make them come back for a look if you startle them and they don’t know what you are. Good close range call to create opportunities in the timber when you can hear a deer walking and can’t see it.

rattling you just can’t beat real antlers but rattle bags do work till you shoot a buck. A set of two point antlers work fine even

These are my go to set of calls
I second the True Talker. Can do grunts and doe bleats. It’s quiet with the rubber covering and isn’t prone to freezing like most models.

Rattle bags are very handy but there’s nothing like using a real antler for raking a bush for calling in mulies.

That article on calling above from Stone Sheep Steve says it all.Very good advice. That call sounds like a good one to get.
Deer voices vary just like peoples voices, same as elk.It is a good idea to switch calls when hunting the same area repeatedly.

Over on the Excalibur Forum, there is an older fellow who goes by the handle of "Wabi".
He makes THE VERY BEST grunt tubes available. Hand made, hand tuned.
Each can be tuned to produce 5 varying calls / sounds.
I have been packing one for years, and it has been responsible for the demise of numerous bucks.

If you contact him, tell him I sent you along.

    Cheers,

    Re: Deer calls

This buck was hanging out 5-600 yards away in the middle of several wide open and very flat fields.

Using just grunt calls, I got him to come into ten yards.
