Buying carb cleaner today and fuel stabilizer. I now have 2 motors the 2 stroke merc 9.9 and a 4 stroke Tohatsu 3.5 that need carb work. No fuel coming to the bowl of the tohatsu. Finally got a spark after sanding the crud off the flywheel and coil arms and points. Not even 2 tanks of gas through the Tohatsu. Got it to run by squirting gas into the carb. Oh the joys of ethanol.

As you likely know, the last true "Mercury" was the 9.8, they stopped making them in the '80s. I know the latest small Mercs are Tohatsu. I think the 9.9 2stroke is as well, but I could be wrong, and it might be a Yami.

HMM ! Ethanol is a renewable fuel because it is produced from biomass. Ethanol also burns more cleanly and completely than gasoline or diesel fuel. Ethanol reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions because the grain or other biomass used to make the ethanol absorbs carbon dioxide as it grows.

We have purple boat gas here in Horsefly at 95 or 97 oc. No ethanol in it. $1.37 a liter though. 6 inches of ice I'm going fishing.

I have brake clean products as well. Just need time. And a day it isn't -15. I happen to be one of those people who get a headache after smelling gas for 5 minutes. I need to be out in the open to work on carbs. I usually take it apart outside, let it dry somewhat and then go in the warm shop to tear down the rest and clean it and blow it out outside again. Under the bench is a 1500 watt radiant heater to keep me warm.
