Have caught a few of those Thompson River steelhead myself over the years but missed the “golden age” doing other stuff. Those fish were probably (if not actually) among the finest in the world. Like the Bella Coola cohoe. Still love just being on the Thompson in the fall.
And remember well a time I walked into the Chilcotin Inn in Alexis Creek for a beer in the fall on my way west to GCreeks as that was the end of pavement and many miles of dust to come. The bartender and I started BSing and he realized I liked fishing so invited me back into the cooler where he showed me a beautiful buck that he had caught before coming to work. Sad …
