Bump. The capstan winches at Princess Auto are $400 off right now. Has anyone here used them?

Yes, I’ve used the capstan winch for fifteen or so years now. Awesome winch. Got mine out of Oregon, was about the only place to get them back then. I’d have to look but I think mine is a Simpson? I just got the winch and run it off my Sthil for powerhead. Once pulled a moose out of a swamp 100 yards. We timed it, 12 minutes and the beauty of a capstan winch is it doesn’t diminish in power because your rope isn’t piling up on itself like a conventional winch where every wrap of cable it decreases in pulling power. Mine is rated for 2,500 pounds

I got the p auto one it works. The knockoff motor would be my only concern with it. I like the newer model portable winch made in canada with the honda that can run at any angle. Is it twice the $$?

I was looking at that one too. Looks like the 35 cc / 1500 lb one can be run with the engine in any direction. About $1200.

Not sure if the larger displacement ones can run on different angles, but would be cool if they did.

Ok, yes I looked on portable winch website. They have a 50cc, 1000kg pulling power winch with a "brake" for $1595. It will run at all angles

Also, we pulled a moose out probably close to 1km last year with a Lewis chainsaw winch. Awesome machine!

That one with the brake looks great. I'm leaning towards the 1550 lb Honda powered one. Although a 2200 lb one might be better if I were to go on a moose hunt some day. There are some cool kits available.
