Politicians care about votes,period.A few wild steelhead or salmon don’t get votes,especially when farmed salmon and steelhead supply the commercial market.This is one reason the DFO responsibilities MUST be repatriated to BC,not just lost in the morass of Ottawa where the only fish they see is on a plate at the government subsidized restaurant

It was the DFO sanctioned COMMERCIAL Chum fishery that did the lion's share of damage to this stock. While FN fisheries did complicate the matter, the largest hit they took as far as removals go was from the commercial sector.

You are however completely accurate in that DFO doesn't care one whit.

And for even more clarification....the in river commercial FN and Non FN sockeye and chum fisheries take most of the steelhead....however with all the legal FN openings...anything now that swims up the Fraser has zero chance when it is wall to wall drift and set nets.

The tradional FN fishery was conducted with weirs,spears and dip nets,and that’s the only method that should be allowed- and NO SELLING fish along the roadside.Continuing the status quo is going to eliminate all salmon fishing by anybody
