I’m not a big fan of kuiu, but like the sleeping bag I have from them.

Spend the $1000.00 bucks for the GWS and never look back!

I've been using a Taiga Works dryloft bag rated for -18C and have been very pleased with it over the last ten years or so. If cash wasn't an issue I would probably go with a Western Mountaineering bag ratted -20C but for less than half the price Taiga will serve you well.

I picked up a Taiga bag this winter. I ran their -12 Barrel Mummy bag in the Wapta ski Traverse. I had the thing unzipped the whole time. In huts but the last two we're unheated. This bag was two pounds lighter than my cheap MEC bag, which has done me great since I was 18 but the Taiga bag is legit and Canadian made. Two thumbs up.

Are the Taiga bags down or synthetic? How well/small do they pack down?

Waterproof down, my tall bag compresses nicely.

    Re: Down Sleeping Bags

My -18 Taiga down bag compresses enough to easily fit into bottom of the several various packs I have. I was worried about compression when I bought the bag but I'm pleased with how small it packs down. I'm sure there are bags that compress smaller but for the money I'm happy with what I have.
