    PAL Advice

Hey guys, I got into hunting last year and have been out a few times with others, and have been obsessively trying to learn more about it since. |
I took my Pal course last May. I still haven't recieved an answer or approval. I've talked to the firearms office of BC several times. Last time they finally gave me some answers, and told me I haven't been declined but I have been flagged. I have no criminal record whatsoever, and have only had 1 speeding ticket. However, they told me it could be family related. My brother was killed by the RCMP in 2015. The officer has since been charged and it is heading to supreme court. All you have to do is google Hudson Brooks and all the info is there.
Anyways, I am a law abiding citizen and believe my brothers death is why I still haven't received my PAL. Is there any legal action I can take? Any advice? I feel my hands are totally tied and I just hope to get my firearms license. Thanks

Sounds like you maybe in one of those situations that most won’t have experience with so it’s hard to give advice

The only person that may be able to give solid advice is a lawyer in my opinion

They might be hesitant to grant the licence until the matter has reached a final resolution. I would say, be a little more patient, cause sometimes it does take them a loooong time to approve these things even in more typical circumstances. Ask the BC CFO what the time line to receive an answer is. In the meantime find someone to take you to a range for some practice, and continue to pursue an interest in hunting. That will serve evidence as a legitimate purpose to possess firearms should the next step become necessary. Generally the remedy for unsatisfactory decisions in government agencies is something called a "Judicial review".

It might be worth consulting with a lawyer who specialises in firmware related law.

I know this may not be a particularly valuable contribution and you might have already considered it, but you might consider picking up a compound bow for the ability to be able to hunt solo, rather than always having to rely on being with someone else and under supervision. Being out there in the bush is a great way to pass the time while you are waiting on answers regarding the PAL.

If you google .... Royal Canadian Police Finding Five .. it will inform you about the screening process... I’m so sorry also that your family is going through this.

Thanks for the help all, and for the kind words. I imagine the BCWF may have some info regarding lawyers.
I bought a compound bow and should really start shooting it more. That’s a good idea. Thanks!

Been going through the same length of waiting. I was told that the investigator is a very busy man and cannot be bothered with little things like an acknowledgement.

That’s quite a story. I live just across the 99 from where this all happened and don’t recall hearing about it. I’ve seen the Justice for Hudson signs, but didn’t know what it was about. I guess not watching TV at all means you miss some important stuff. I hope you guys get the outcome you’re hoping for in this!

As far as the PAL goes, you are in a bit of a bind. I would be patient for a bit longer, as poking the bear gets you nowhere. It’s not like the government is above denying your license out of spite. Practice your archery, go on accompanied hunts, and if they end up denying you, then definitely get a lawyer involved. If your record is as clean as you say it is, then that’s not what is delaying the process.

Ask them to either approve your application, or deny it IN WRITING.

I would also suggest you ask this question on canadian gunnutz, there are quite a few people there that have good advice on this subject. Some are actual lawyers, some just play one on the internet.
