A point system is a terrible idea! We are so much better off with a lottery. “Point creep” is a real thing and it wouldn’t take long before it is virtually impossible to draw. Look at every jurisdiction that has a point system, every year it takes longer and longer to draw. Every year, more hunters, less animals. Longer draw times.

Yep. What about once you are drawn, you cannot put in for that species again for say, 3 years? Or like some states, results are out early enough, if you are drawn, you have a certain amount of days to decide if you want to keep the tag or return it, in case of circumstances where you can’t make the hunt or whatever, Then they just redraw that tag, and you can apply again the next year. A point system is not the answer at all, just ask 99% of the people who are on points systems.

Its already impossible to draw an elk on the island...i like the sound of the system below.

    Bonus points

Montana has a bonus point system in place for all special permits (deer, elk, antelope, sheep, moose and mountain goat). Every year that you are unsuccessful in the drawing, and you participate in the bonus point system, you will be awarded a point. When you apply in the draw your accrued points are squared to increase the odds exponentially for the applicants with more accrued points. For example, if you have four base bonus points those will be squared and you will then have 16 bonus points going into the 2018 drawing. All base bonus points accumulate over time until you draw a permit.

I know, it is frustrating. I’ve been putting in for moose in the east Kootenays for 22 years. Still haven’t drawn. I can draw a goat every other year, when they are pretty much guaranteed odds. Lottery definitely has its downfalls, but a point system is going to ruin chances for the younger people getting into hunting. I would hate to see BC turn into something like Utah, where there is 134 years worth of applicants to get drawn for an elk. I think there can be changes made to our lottery system to make it better where our odds can be increased. Check out this link, it is a great explanation of point creep.

    Hunters complain a lot.
Our open seasons are incredible and they are cheap.

Bullreaper nailed it. Point system is a bad idea. Equal opportunity and hopefully one year the stupid computer picks you.

Put your name in the hat. If you're not picked then your alternatives are pretty damn good.

The problem with this, is you would be pricing people out of hunting, then it becomes a rich man’s sport. Hunting is something everybody who wants to, should get a chance to do, regardless of financial situation. We need to create more opportunity by getting more animals back on the mountain!

Truly an increase to $30-50 for an application does not price anyone out of hunting for a sheep LEH application. Anyone can afford to spend that much to apply, and certainly some species could be increased over others, still leaving plenty of opportunity for essentially free applications.
