    Tree Bark for food

I came across this fir tree the other day in the fraser valley. Upwards of 8 feet off the ground, the bark has been consumed in large patches. I had a couple big bears on my camera in the spring very close to this tree, but from what I understand it could also be porcupine. How can you tell what ate the bark? I put a camera pointed at this tree now out of curiosity and I'm just looking for a bit of background info on this. Cheers
