I just looked these up at GPSCity.com. Prices seem pretty good.

I thought the newest Explorer was supposed to accept chips with the offroad maps etc? It doesn't look like this is the case...Bummer.

I still use my old Garmin Etrex Legend with the Backroads Map chip. It's small and has so much detail when it comes to terrain, old FSRs, tracks, trails, etc. I don't really want to replace it.
This is where the Garmin Inreach Mini works well for me as a communication tool. It's small and does just what I need it to do.
My friend has the Garmin Inreach Explorer, he likes the communication aspect but doesn't care for the maps.

A solar charge kit is worth the weight but I will say the new Delorme devices have pretty awesome battery life.

I don't know anybody that bought one that has regretted the decision.

At my cabin in the mountains it can take a while to send/receive messages, but a sat phone has the same problem.

I use the iPhone for maps, aerials, GPS and the InReach SE to text. The new mini InReach looks like the ticket to me. Battery life is fabulous on the SE.

Garmin told me they will be releasing a new explorer this year with a map chip capability and be able to install and run the BRMB chips

They told me the same thing 15 months ago when i called and asked about running BRMB. I wouldn't hold your breath.
