    Whonnock Lake Black Crappie

Usually when I fish there for trout, I mostly catch crappie. On Saturday I took my son to fish for crappie and we caught only 1 and a number of trout!
Any tips to the crappie fishery there?

Also saw some otters there. They were definitely not beavers. First time I've seen them there.

Chronomids...under a float or with a slow sink line.

A 1/8 once jig head with a chartreuse or black chienel body and marabou tail under a small float. Toss it near structure reel rod tip down towards the water so you have a tight line. Lift rod tip slowly pulling float towards you then pause for 15 seconds. Repeat these steps

Trolling is not near as effective because the way they key in on structure and how shallow they can be at times. Add in that they are often schooled up you are missing out on a lot of fish because you just pass through the school

Yes I have caught them trolling kwikfish, woolly buggers, spinners and small crankbaits. Numbers wise trolling catches about 1/10th the fish. Jigging, float fishing, and spin casting is way more effective

So, assuming that I can still launch my boat at Whonnock Lake, is now the time to be fishing for spring crappie? And what should I use?

    1. Human over population

I’ve had the best luck fishing pumpkin heads in the lily pads near the wharf. I can’t recall what time of year.
