Tens of thousands of seals in the Salish Sea are devouring millions of adult and juvenile salmon, sparking renewed debate about culling the furry predators.
Recent studies have linked high seal-population density to troubled chinook runs and the decline of southern resident killer whales that feed on chinook in the summer.

Wild Chinook salmon productivity is negatively related to seal density, and not related to hatchery releases in the Pacific Northwest

Remember 20-odd years ago there was much consternation because there was a bloody sea lion hanging around the Ballard Locks in Seattle and gobbling up the few remaining Steelhead from a decimated run that were trying to return to spawn? The local latte-quaffing urban enviro-weenies didn't want them to shoot the sea lion and now that Steelhead run is extinct.

    Extrapolate that coast wide.
Given their grossly overpopulated numbers, the collapse of coast-wide fisheries is damn near a forgone conclusion should we not see past the "enviro-weenies" ignorant-of-fact objections.
