    Spring flies for beginner

This will be my first year trying out fly fishing. I picked up one of those Cabela痴 combo fly rod & reel sets and I知 going to give it a whirls when I知 out bear hunting next week. I always come across small little lakes while I知 out on the quad and figure this year I値l actually stop for a bit and try my luck with a fly rod. So I知 wondering what flies would be best to use in these types of lakes in the spring? Any suggestions or little pointers would be great!

oh and I値l be in the Lac la hache area around Rail lake and over to Timothy lake side in Region 5-2 if that changes anything.

Chironimids are a staple in lakes, but a boat is best for this style of fishing. Hares ear nymphs, small leech patterns and tom thumbs for top water action are great to carry with you. Small ponds/lakes and creeks with little pressure are easier to target trout as they are less selective. Spring fishing is usually sub surface then once the weather warms you can fish dries to imitate midges, mosquitoes, caddis ect.

lakes can be a tough go from Shore. So if its hard don't get yerself down. If your Quadding and fishing, keep an eye out on the used lists for a float tube you can pump up on shore.... and a cheap set of waders...

    as for flies,
olive wholly buggers black wholly buggers, water boatmen, skuds, dragon fly nymphs Chironimids as mentioned. boobies......
watch a lot of youtube on technique.... you can troll skuds and buggers when your frustrated.

Basically go to a fly shop,,, not a Canadian tire or walmart... buy a pile of colors and sizes of the flies you are given here and go fish... it will take you a while to dial in the color and presentation...

I'm the least expert fly fisherman on this forum but I do catch a few fish and I use nothing but Woolly Buggers.

I love fly fishing but my life is already complicated enough without learning all there is about matching the right fly with conditions. I asked a few seasoned guys what they would use if they could only carry one fly and they all replied "Woolly Bugger".

    Works good for me.

#8 Doc Spratley (black or green), Carey special in green, Small leeches in black, brown. Pumpkin heads. those are all good general attractor patterns. You could also try hanging a chronomid under a bobber (indicator) or figuring out what particular bugs the trout are feeding on.

If I had a choice of only one fly to use anytime of year it would be my standby, egg sucking leech.

If confined to the shore, try to fish the shoreline where the wind is at your back. It will be easier to get your line out there and the direction of the breeze will keep it straightened. Cronies are always the main staple and often the only thing available early spring. That said, most people find them to be the most intimidating (not necessarily most difficult) to fish. Hang them under an indicator just off bottom and slowly work your way up.
Black Olive or Brown sized 18 to 12 with some kind of white bead head. Pornomids have always worked well for me.
