Yes you are right, many things to think about and can be very overwhelming when looking at scopes to buy, one can waste a lot of time and money on something you don't need or don't like after the fact, do a little research on how scopes are put together internally with their adjustment systems,

I also struggled with what your asking a while back and there's many parts to buying a scope, Brand, Weight, Power Range, Reticle, Turret, internal MOA adjustment in elevation for long range shooting, What are you wanting to do with it ? Target shooting out to 1500 yards or a simple hunting application of 400 yards or less ? it seems now a days everyone wants the best of both worlds.....A long range hunting scope !

As far as brands go most every optic company makes what a guy wants in price and application, as BCBRAD has pointed out so well above you really need to test the functions at the range to ensure your scope is doing what you want it to do, regardless of the brand is it tracking properly with windage and elevation adjustments.

For me I found I really enjoy shooting out to 6-700 yards but most of my hunting is at half that range or less, I have found a compromise where I prefer a scope in the 3-15x44 or 4.5-14x40 range with a 30mm tube, a simple duplex reticle and a turret dial calibrated to a specific load or just an MOA dial, this fits my needs and is a good compromise to weight, size and power needed for the best of both worlds.

I have also found as I got older when at the RANGE I need a more than 10 power to be consistent with my target shooting, I also found I needed glasses !!!

I bought a huskemaw to try for myself because reading internet opinions is a tough deal, the old you can’t make everyone happy aplies to everything on the internet it seems. I did all the data recovery got my custom turret and have never looked back. Great scope has bin on my go to rig for 6 years from -25c to pissing down rainstorm it’s bin through it and I can’t find any complaints. The thing about it is a 400 yrd shot was guess work at best before I got it and now with practic I will with extreme confidence make 4-500 yd shots I will be getting another in the smaller version this year. So I’d say in my opinion after 6 years these scopes are no gimmick .
wonder what’s over the next hill?

For me it comes down to what I expect from that particular system i'm putting together. I have smaller caliber guns like a 22-250 that I know wont get past 5-600 yards, 400 is actually more realistic. In that situation a scope like a huskemaw or nightforce arent really practical for me, I have a zeiss on it that I dont turn the turret, just varmint type reticle. On the longer range guns a turret that turns has proven for me to be quite useful. I have three of the huskemaws and really like them for the shooting system. The thing I dont like about them is the glass, IMHO is not the best, but again, love the system. I am looking to order a new leupold vari x 6 with the CDS system just because the shooting system is basically the same as the huskemaw but the glass I believe is better. But, the price is a little higher. I have a vari x 6 with the CDS but it is only on the elevation turret, they now make it on the windage as well, I think that will be a great scope, also has the lit reticle and it flashes if your gun isnt level. I think that thing will be the perfect fit for any hunting rig, and it only weighs 19oz. They tell me Leupold is closed for the holidays until the 4th. Mine will be ordered that day, cant wait.

There's a reason why Leupolds VX2 3x9 40mm is their meat and potatoes scope. It hits the mark in versatility, reliability, quality and affordability.

30 mm tubes, 50mm objectives, high turrets and confusing/complicated reticles have their place on the range and for professionals who seriously train with them as part of their career.

    update:
got the new varmint reticle/illumination. Really like the scope but not super happy with the brightness of the illumination. The fire dot vari x 6 I have is perfect at any time of the day but this varmint reticle isn’t bright enough to be usable during the brightest part of the day. I bought it with the anticipation of being able to use the flashing internal level at any point during the day. I have tried the brightest setting and the only way to see it during the day is to pull your eye away and create a half moon dark spot that you can see inside the lens. Kind of disappointed. Gonna have to buy an external level. Should have bought another firedot, really like it!!

My newest scope is a Vortex Viper 4-12x40mm. While it is a decent scope, it doesn’t hold a candle to my VX-3 (2.5-8x36) in terms of brightness, clarity and especially the range of eye relief. Again, not bad, but I’ll be trading it or selling to buy another Leupold after this season I’m sure. The guys at the sales counter have sure drank the Kool aid, although I heard that Vortex gives the salespeople in the stores perks for sales goals.

Some people crow about the 'glass' it's all about the glass, euro branded glass being almost orgasmic. The 'glass' has to be good enough to clearly see the target, generally the VXII or Vortex PST, in other words, mid-range quality, and the ilk work fine. Will not cause any issues at twilight = legal shooting hours. However, a quality lens will give the user better detail and contrast. Just depends if your activity requires that.

A scope that does not employ an external system for compensation for the the bullets trajectory and the effects of wind, basically your regular old skool 3x9, will only be useful with in the kill zone of the animal hunted. This means if your 30-06 blue box 180gn Federals drops 9" at 300' with a 200 yard zero and the kill zone on a deer is ,lets say 10" then you are good for a bit more than 300' practical range for that cartridge/scope combination....so a reliable low-mid range scope would work just fine. Now if it was a 300 Weatherby that range could be extended to 400+ yards and may require a scope of more power than a 4X, but 4X is very doable.

For longer than 300 yards, external adjustment (turrets) are the way to go in conjunction with a range finder. Not all turrets function as they should, this being some will not be accurate or linear in the adjustment range. There are several that are very good ,others not so much ( paying more does not always assure the most precise). The user must check the calibration of the turrets by testing at the range.

A scope must hold zero, again this doesn't always happen. People spend a lot of time fiddling with loads, bullets , powders etc and can only achieve a 1.25" group, good enough for most hunting to be sure, some of the grouping issues are caused by the lack of a precise repeatable zero. If holding zero is an issue changing to a scope that works may half your groups.

There is more to it than throwing money at a brand name.
    Very informative. Thank you.
