Post Scientists Call For New Fisheries Act

"Canada has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to set things right — to undo the damage done by the previous government while positioning Canada as a world leader in fisheries management by placing science and evidence front and centre.

When the Liberal government was elected in 2015, Prime Minister Trudeau issued a mandate letter to the new Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, which included a directive to base aquatic management decisions on science, facts, and evidence. As fisheries scientists, we applaud this, but promises alone cannot ensure a sustainable future for Canada’s fisheries. To do that, we need to improve the Fisheries Act — the law governing fish and their habitat in this country."

Justin likes to use catch phrases and keep saying them. He will flop on all promises.

The slamon fishery actually comprises a whole lot of my income these days.
And I concur with your thoughts on this matter.

    Perhaps even more concerning is:

And the very serious possibility the government will ignore the advice completely (well - excluding FN's that is) regarding complete closures.

    A tad worried...

Does the fisheries have any idea how many fish the natives catch?

I am fairly confident that FN harvest of fish and game is a bigger guess than non FN harvest

I doubt they even have a clue on non FN salmon harvest but bet they have a number they use anyway lol

As someone who is very close to many FN from mid Fraser to the mouth who net, I can tell you the reported catch is maybe 10% of what they actually take in. Every year they are told by upper members of each band to fake the numbers to get more and longer openings.

These numbers are a joke.... I know 4 guys who probably took that many springs and sold them for 2$ a lb.

    http://www-ops2.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fr...KeptCatch.html
With all the openings they had and that few sockeye killed lol.
As someone who is on the river almost daily...these numbers are a joke.
But perfect for people who like to use fish farms as a non racial scapegoat to the demise of the Fraser

There is the openings for the year so far....
Take a moment and actually read the LEGAL netting that happens
Oh and thank you DFO for allowing the FN chum fishery this last week. You have successfully allowed nets to finish off the remaining couple hundred interior steelhead that will now be extinct.

I was told the First Nations have a cannery around Hope and shipping canned salmon out of the country. Is there any truth to that story?
