Hahahahah ghost nets..... what a freeking joke, the few test nets allowed will not catch sturgeon. Some that are allowed to fish don't care.

Re: Fraser River Sturgeon C & R Fishery Under Scrutiny

FN are seeking a harvest fishery on sturgeon - fact. They pulled a similar article last year about the same time.

Article is full of holes and misinformation, primarily doled out by the FN person interviewed. Mr. Malloway should know better as he is the chair of the Lower Fraser Fishing Authority - LFFA - and sits with the same ministry people who are in charge of sturgeon on the Fraser river. If he is truly misinformed, he should NOT be chair of the LFFA. If he does know the facts, he has blatantly lied, and should not be chair.

Spawning closure areas for sturgeon are in effect in numerous known sturgeon spawning areas from May 15 to July 31 every year and have been in effect since 2010?. Anglers must stay out of these areas. However, FN have full access with gillnets. Fish have to bite for anglers to catch them, and only have to swim from A to B to get hung up in a net. Angler mortality is extremely low. Net mortality is extremely high.

Sturgeon handling practices are in effect and have some bite. The photo in the picture does not illustrate current sturgeon handling practices in any way. All sturgeon must be kept in the water as much as possible. No more lifting fish. No more fish over 150cm fork length in the boat. The author of the article did not do his homework on this article whatsoever. It sure looks like he was shilled. After looking at his other list of articles, it appears the author should stick to watching the Food Network.

Sturgeon tagging and monitoring continues on the Fraser mostly due in part to angling. This project is over 20 years old now and is key to learning about sturgeon and protecting them.

The sturgeon fishery provides good tourism. Done right, this fishery is sustainable. There are things we all don't like about sports we are passionate about. I don't think shooting game at 1000 yards is hunting. But I keep my mouth shut because it is hunting and we need to stick together. You don't like catch and release but like fishing? You know what to do.

First it is fishing, and then it will be hunting. Its all intertwined and connected. Be wary.
