    12 gauge or 20 gauge

I am looking at starting duck hunting and my dad has a 20g. Would I be able to use a 20 gauge for hunting geese and ducks?

    Thank you

Yes tons of ducks and geese have been taken with a 20g. That's a fine upland waterfowl gun. 12 is just better because it's a 12g

Okay thank you. My dad has a 20 gage he never uses and I figure why not put it use and start duck hunting

Just be sure it has a choke IM or more open and has a 3" chamber so you can use steel safely and efficiently. My X killed more waterfowl than I can count with her Mod 20 ga 3" Wingmaster.

X2 on the modified 20ga. 3" magnum, their just a tad less than 12ga. 2 and 3/4 loads.

Get the 12ga. If you get the 20GA and you want to use it in the shotgun zone for deer you won't find adequate ammo for the 20GA.

Shoot ... I didn't read your dad has a 20GA you can use. In that case I wouldl use your dads and buy a 12GA later.

So thanks for the replies as a new hunter and new to waterfowl hunting I have to ask. I remember the part in my PAL course about the choke but we didn't get too much in to it. For the 20g would there be a choke on it or is it something I will have to be add to the shotgun if it doesnt already have one? Sorry for the newbi question

I figured out the answer to my own question. My dad has a half choke for the 20g. Should I be looking at purchasing a different size choke for duck hunting?

OK so does your dad's have a screw in choke of is it fixed. If it is fixed it will be stamped on the barrel either IC, Mod or Full. You shouldn't be shooting steel through a full choke. Mod or IC are OK. If it is a screw in you want either 3 =Mod. or 4= IC, small notched(not the big notched you insert the choke wrench into) in the end of the choke
