    Anyone know what this is?

Ok, so we are about 12 miles from the nearest road and find this. Perfect circle about 6' across with a trench around it. Trench is approx a foot wide and about a foot and a half deep. No spillway on the trench, just a circle. Nothing growing on the centre circle except a few weeds, but the structure has been here long enough that moss is growing inside the trench.
After looking around, I found a square steel pin in the centre of the circle (this rules out Ancient Aliens). No markings on the pin, 5/8" square and about 2' long.

Sorry, not sure how to post any other way.
I tried to look at links and didn't work for me either.

The pin pin has no markings, but was thinking maybe elevation marker?

As an old surveyor its got to be a property corner maker (iron pin). 5/8 inch square about 2 foot long steel rod is the go-to for land surveyors to mark property corners and then usually a white wooden guard stake beside it, but that could be long gone. The circle has me head scratching though. Often to locate a property corner from a satellite or aerial photo later we used to paint a big white 'L' about 4 feet each way with the pin at the corner of the L, you'd see it later on the air photo and plot lot lines from there. I'm wondering if the circle was for the same purpose?

That's an IP and should only be protruding about a few centimeters above the ground.
I marks a legal property corner but should also have a guard stake or marker post.
Been a surveyor for 35 years but have never seen anyone excavate a trench around a pin unless the property owner wanted to make damn sure he could locate the corner if the pin went missing.
Possibly in dispute with a neighbor.
    I'm going to the dogs.
