how to attach gun to pack, any ideas

I used a gun bearer on a hunt last year for the first time. It was handy in that the rifle was always in arms reach, and comfortable, but my rifle took a real beating with the scope chafing against the shoulder strap and the butt against every little twig.

This, plus I found I was developing hot spots under my belt from the additional weight on my right side. That said, I prefer it to the Safari Sling.

I wish I could say I carry my rifle in my hands at all times, but that sucks on steep terrain.

I had a surprise face to face with a griz in a creek bottom last year while packing out from a solo goat hunt. I never got my rifle off my shoulder before the bear woofed at me and ran, luckily away from me. If it had charged, I wold have been at its mercy.

That said, I still will hike with my rifle slung over my shoulder.

In your hand is best, I have a couple encounters that would of ended different if I had it slung on my shoulder.

Fair enough, and it is when I think I may need it. But that is mostly when I'm putting a stalk on an animal, or approaching meat we have hanging. After I had my run in last year, my 7mm-08 was in my hands until I was confident the bear was long gone. ( And yes, many will say that caliber is useless for a griz charge but I choose my caliber for the game I hunt, not for defense, but that's another debate)

I just isn't practical for me in most situations to carry in my hands in the unlikely event that I may have a need to use it for defense. I have a healthy respect for dangerous game and try to be as safe as I can, but I try to keep the risk of what I do in perspective.

All that said, I still like the external frame pack and the ability to sling a rifle. Still provides good access

That's less then I thought it would be. With the current exchange situation, I am always hesitant to buy from the US.
