    Tarp material

I have been watching this new reality show titled Alone and see clips of previous contestants using, for tarp material, a strong, light fabric. I thought they called it sail cloth but I am not sure. One guy had a poncho made out of this material. Does anyone know the material I am referring to?

There are several fabrics known as "sail cloth" over the years. I would check Yellow Pages, Google and then call one of the sailmakers in the Vancity area.

That said, I doubt that you can get a lighter fabric really suitable for ponchos, etc. than 30D silnylon and a poncho of this weighs about 4-5 ozs. Mine is an original ID and I keep it in my emerg, kit always.

maybe if you went to the web page and looked at the tools material they wee allowed on each show, it may say more what it is.
they list all their items allowed on that show

How small do they pack down? Seems like something that would definitely worth always carrying...?

Definitely sil tarp like boxhitch says. That said, an old spinnaker or such would make for an interesting base camp tarp if you could get it strung up correctly.

    Siltarp

But, siltarp is not fire resistant.
I try to use canvas whenever possible.

That is a very good point but I was looking for a light tarp for an emergency situation. I have been lucky enough to never have to spend the night out in an uncontrolled environment, I have come close a couple of times. At crowding sixty-six I am trying to lighten my pack as I am finding difficult to believe a pound is still sixteen ounces, at the end of the day it feels like twenty-six.
