These pictures come from the Alberta Hunting Forum. Snitched for your benefit here...
Prior to 1983, Waterton held a LOT of Old Warrior type rams of truly magnificent proportions.
That year, the dreaded lungworm pneumonia complex hit that herd - most likely culprit was introduction from BC involving domestic sheep (HUGE Lesson here Folks!).
This insidious disease attacked the older mature Rams first and Hardest. In short, they fell like windfall in the grasp of a hurricane.
Pretty well none of the Old Masters survived.
For me, it was sickening & heartbreaking to help collect their carcasses - so many struck down while in the absolute prime of their life.
Then (I am uncertain of what remains) the old abattoir in the park ended up with so damn many record breaking sets of horns that it was dumbfounding. The record books of today would have to be completely re-written at the top end were these ever to be recorded.
Thus, it was with great satisfaction and happiness that I saw these pictures the other day. Taken in that same location, it seems to suggest those magnificent genetics are not dead, and if given a chance, may resurface once again...
Without any further preamble, and with extreme Thanks to "Sevenmil" on Alberta Outdoors...
