Re: How Many Seasons To Get First Archery Deer?

I think it took me 3 seasons to get my first archery animal....a spike whitetail.

I think I've only killed 5 deer so far and made two crappy shots on black bears. This is my 11th season.

Dont say that too fast my father has taken almost every deer with a bow within the 20yard mark. Almost all my archery kills are 30yards or less. Set your self up right and 20 yards is completely realistic

I find distance is rarely the issue it is getting a clear shot do to angle or bush. 2nd toughest part is getting busted on the draw

have faith and remember when they hang up just out of range just call here deer deer deer lol

    Speaking of archery

    I was lucky I harvested a little White tail buck the first year out . I have not been that lucky since . 3 wt , 2 BB , 4 Md , 1 turkey and a moose . I can't remember how long I have had a bow in my hand . Since around 1993/ 1994 .

I've hunted exclusively with the recurve since 1993. In 2010 I moved to a compound while I recovered from a wound (old age). This year, I'm hunting with a long bow.

My first archery kill was a mule deer buck, a good kill, clean shot and the animal went down in sight. That was during my 3rd or 4th year of hunting with the bow.

To be serious about taking animals with archery tackle, I highly recommend you consider using a treestand. Highly recommend it.

Thanks for the advice. I have been reading how effective they can be.

Treestands are great for whitetails and elk but they won't work great for bears....at least not in BC. My favorite archery hunt is still hunting late season mule deer. When the conditions are good, it's probably my favorite hunt or at least near the top.

Cool Re: How Many Seasons To Get First Archery Deer?

Took my first, a smallish Saskatchewan whitetail buck, in my second year with an ancient compound bow.
That was back in the early '70's.
Took many following with that old bow, and became downright addicted to pointy stick hunting.
That said, I also hunted a LOT with rifles, shotguns & muzzle loaders.

In the early 90's my left shoulder simply gave out due to far to many injuries.
That took out my archery fun for a considerably long period of time. Missed it dreadfully.
Then a BC Buddy introduced me to the crossbow, something I had never considered, and now very much wish I had!

First year into that I took a BC whitetail buck & doe.
Since then I've taken a lot more whitetails, a decent handful of Mulies, and a fair number of Blacktails with the crossbow.
Certainly feels GOOD to be back in The Game!!

Rather agree with JT on the tree stands, but don't overlook ground blinds either...

I agree definitely suited to whitetail and elk. A mule deer spot and stalk is a great great archery hunt. Each style has it's place. For new hunters, I find there is so much to learn under 50 yards, a treestand puts a bit more control in the release of the arrow and increases the odds of a good kill.
