So what negative effects have we had from changes Harper instituted?
1. Human over population
2. Government burden and overreach
Numerous. But of course not so much fodder for the main stream media.
Harpo destroyed the habitat component of the Fisheries Act for one reason - support for his buddies in the petroleum industry.
This was at a time when operations in Alberta (foremost but also occurring elsewhere) had tread over the line in terms of Fisheries Act Violations. Pretty much common knowledge. This was not a coincidence. Coupled with planned massive pipeline expansions, the time was ripe for Industry (oops - Harper in fact) to make their move. And they did.
The number of pipe / gas line river crossings alone in Alberta that would have been subject to Fisheries Act inspections (violations) that occurred immediately after Harper's decree were quite interesting. Poised for the moment methinks.
Of course you won't read much about this in the media, at that juncture the point was moot. The "new law" made such actions perfectly legal. That said, a little digging and I am certain someone as capable as yourself at online researching will discover exactly what I am referring to.
In my case, I have a Brother and many Buddies working in the industry. What they saw, what they reported, was to me rather alarming.
NO WAY to manage fish IMHO. Yes, concessions have to be made, but not without considering the implications for the resource and potential mitigation efforts. Time to put that last piece back into the process...

Well I agree with your premise that we have to protect fish and wildlife habitat but I simply don't see any evidence that Harper's changes have done anything bad for the environment.
Cons changes simply cut a lot of red tape and took the power away from FN.
You can't say that MSM is simply not talking about it because they are protecting Harper and CONs. We know whose side MSM is.
But in reality if a PM wants pipelines, he gets pipelines whether there is a Wildlife protection act or not. They find a way.
Even with Harper's changes most of the pipeline projects have been turfed by the Liberals which tells me that they can pretty much do whatever they want, with or without changes to the wildlife habitat protection policies.
Science and environmental concerns simply don't play a role.
Even with that said I guess it's better to have something in writing rather than nothing.

Might be a little difficult to see much of anything from the safety of your armchair in Slurry rather than the front lines where it has been occurring...
Wow. How incredibly insightful...Even with that said I guess it's better to have something in writing rather than nothing.
