What size of lab did you have before?
My girl is 20.5 " and 55lbs from good working lines.
She's solid built, tough, smart and dependable.
If you really liked working with a lab, there are good small labs around.

Don't know her exact size but was defantly larger then your lab. No doubt she was a good dog and know Labs are good dogs overall

I am set on going a different route this time though

Try to find someone with a Springer and watch them hunt or train. Jump shooting small streams or over decoys in lakes they are super. My Winnie once chased a wounded so far in a lake in Alberta that we could not see her with binocs. By the time we rounded up a boat to chase after her she was coming a shore with a very old dead mallard. Guess she never did catch up with the swimmer. Geese in the ocean or fast water would be a bit much.

Most springers are very biddable but some lines can be quite headstrong. Winnie was out of the Hales Smutt line and at times insisted on having her way which is why Lou Craig passed her on to me rather than field trialing her.

Stick with a lab, But get a smaller bred one. My lab is 48lbs and she retrieves the odd bird

Retrieves the odd bird??? She's a retrieving maniac! Nicest young yellow I've seen in a long time. Let me know if you ever want to pair Rosie with my 63 lb. boy and we'll have some amazing pocket rockets!!

Thank you for the link. this will be my next dog. Ive always admired the dog in your avatar but could not positively id it. ????

As far as labs go no one will disagree that they are an amazing water fowler, no shortage of them around. If you want something a little different then most look around a little. My griffon doesn't mind the cold weather, we have hunted boundary bay with ice on the ocean. It does not get prairie cold around here too often and if your dog has drive then I wouldn't worry about it too much. I cant speak to other dogs. Is that all your planning on hunting with your pup is ducks ? If you like to bird hunt in general (we have a good variety here) even rabbit hunting, then have a look at any versatile with a good coat.
