Cool Vancouver island where to hunt grouse /quail

Finally got all my licenses and a gun.... next where to hunt in the cowichan area. Any suggestions for a rookie would be wonderful thanks in advance.

Head out towards Nitinat . Lots of area to explore out there. Bring a bear tag. Make sure you look at the regs at the no hunting area around Cowichan lake, and the no hunting areas up the Nitinat river.

Yep, grouse seem to show up wherever. Look very closely in thickets, on logs etc. Grouse numbers aren't super high on the island though, not like some places on the mainland.

Usually the less travelled areas have better hunting then the busy mains.

Have a look a Google earth and back road map books. Pick a couple spurs back there that have access to previously logged area and check them out.
You can get lucky driving, but best to get a good vantagpoint and glass the old cutblocks.

My apologies for the above response. I never read the title fully and assumed you were talking about deer.

But as it pertains to birds, We always see grouse over Nitinat way as well. See quite a few Blues in the higher areas, but the last two years of spring bear have seen plenty of grouse. Have a look at Klanawa Mainline, and Darling Main. Both can be found in the backroads mapbook. Tons of old spurs off each to explore for birds
