    Prawn Regs Changing

Just a heads up to those if you who go out for Prawns.
There is some changes and closures coming for some, especially if you go out around Bowen etc.
Also, there are bouy changes when using prawn traps in 2023, I think once you purchase you 2023/2024.
You will only be allowed to use round floats for prawn (can’t say if there is a minimum diameter?) and I believe only cylinder style floats for crab.

Anyways, just make sure you look up the regs, it’s not business as usual.
And if purchasing new gear, keep it in mind.

Got any more info on the closures? Coming in march? I was aware of the float changes, my gear already complies..

No changes here in PG, it just down a bit from the fish sticks at Costco.

Look up Pacific Anglers Friday report on YouTube.
Either this past week or the week previous shows the see closed.
Talking to my friend in Nanaimo, it’s closed as of January I believe until March or so ( don’t know the actual opening).
Used to be able to prawn out there, but not now.

Sounds like a cyclic closure for prawn recovery..there was one a few years back in Howe Sound..

That’s what they are hoping it’s all about, that it is just a 1 year closure to replenish stocks which is a good idea.
I was told dfo was clamping down harder trying to nail illegal harvest that must be taking a toll in areas that get lots of use.

What is a bit of a concern is that we are talking about dfo.
Very little of trust these days, so there is always a small concern if it will stay closed.
Only stating what are on some folks mind when they heard about it.

The round bouys suck if you are out on windy days.
May cause the front trap to bounce more off the ground vs using a cylinder bouy.
Guess an anchor in front of both traps is now a must if not calm out.

I would have rather they changed it to round floats on the crab traps and the cylinder/bullet floats on the prawn traps. As usually your fishing deeper water for prawns and the bullet floats tend to drag less water.
I guess we won't see any more Milk jugs or Tide bottles being used.

Yup, more drag and more bounce, imo.
