    Brant 3, Ian 0 - Day 4 of the 07 B.C. Brant season, Hunt #3

I think the quest for perfection is a common element of all waterfowlers. Let me explain, if you've ever been gunning and birds aren't falling quicker then you can retrieve them, then by in large you spend your time analysing the situation over and over to the point of obsession, but then again, isn't that why waterfowlin is so attractive? Just when you think you've got it figured out, things change.

Today was much calmer, overcast with rain due later, all and all things looked good!

See brant on the way out only made things better, and

Jumping brant from where I was yesterday and planned to be today was even better again!

I think the decoys went out in world record time, the blind went up like I knew what I was doing.

Behind me the whole time was about 100 brant watching the show. I've had it happen enough to have high hopes that they'd pick up and fly over, and when they did, you can imagine my excitement....

Of course it's never that easy and they flew on bay 100ish yards out, just enough to be a tease...

The day went through waves of birds moving, and birds sitting. I did have a group of 7 pay a real close look, but they didn't like what I had for dinner..

The bluebills on the other hand loved me!

Here's my attempt at a pitboss photo of 2 drakes buzzing the spread.

Those bluebills did do one thing, they gave me confedence that the boat and rig mustn't be too bad, or else they wouldn't be flying 20 yards out from me

The tide was du to be lower today, and have done a little rototilling on the way in yesterday I didn't feel like a 6 to 8 hour mediatation and pulled the pin and headed in.

Getting closer, much closer, but still running a hard skunk....

Did find one neat thing at the lower tide,

I huge oyster bed! Most of these guys are 6" to 8" long and I would have taken my count, but this area is closed because of contamination...

My last kick at the kitty is next saturday, last day, last chance....

    Only time will tell,

    Very best,

    Ian

Great pictures Ian. Maybe you should move over 100 yards so they fly by closer!
Seriously, Brant are probably the hardest bird to bag in the province. There are a few dedicated guys who live for it and when you get one it'll be a trophy worthy of mounting.
Keep the pics coming and good luck on the weekend.

Worth mounting???? OH YEAH I've shot 5 of them over the years and have 4 on my wall. Best part is no body know what they are. I had a CO at the BCWF convention in penticton last year ask what kind of bird I had in my hand? I thought they would know????? Hunt'n brant is like hitt'n your nutz with a hammer and putting ice on them.....hurts like hell and then feels so good. Lets see some dead birds soon boys!
