Griffs are about as versatile as you can get, as well,,,,they point, they retrieve, love the water and don't freeze during the colder months, plus they track. When they're soaking wet it takes them a very short time to dry off. They are about the most social hunting dog as you can find. I really like their size,,,,,my female tips the scale at 48 pounds.

I use her for upland. Trained to track and waterfowl but don't do much of it. Very similar to the griff above. The only reason I'd go with a pp over a griff is they have historically better testing scores.

Re: What other breeds dogs do you folks use hunting other then hounds
We have an OOOPs, (Springer/Golden) awesome little dog. A mutt from 2 health tested Field Champion bloodlines. Waterfowl and upland she works very well.

Re: What other breeds dogs do you folks use hunting other then hounds
Iv got a dog that the breeder said was a labradoodle. Hes red in color like a setter and has longer course hair.
Dog has a nose like no lab iv had...hes a 1 1/2 now and is great at seeking it and flushing upland birds, still working on the retrieving part. So far two trips out with the gun this year and two pheasants.

Re: What other breeds dogs do you folks use hunting other then hounds
Border collies are pretty good at putting up bears and cats..as long as the handler sets them up

Re: What other breeds dogs do you folks use hunting other then hounds
We've got a Griff pup on the way, she'll be here on Nov 29 at 11 weeks old. I've had long coat german shepherds for about 30 years and my luck with their life span has been progressively worse with my last guy passing at just under 6 years of an enlarged heart. He came from a very reputable breeder whose dogs regularly live 13-15 years and that's why I got him from her. She offered me a discount on another pup if I liked but in all honesty it was time to change it up. The wife mentioned that she would like a dog that was non shedding and through a process of elimination we decided on a Griffon. We've read lots of great things about them

Where's your griff coming from? Mine has turned out to be just like what I researched about griffs on the net so I'm super happy about that but after being on a couple of different griff face book pages for some time, it sure seems like there's a fair bit of discrepancy with their coats and size. Seems like a lot of monster size griffs coming from some breeders in the States and some shed more than you'd expect. Mine pup came from the third breeding of two dogs so I pretty much knew what I was getting based on all the previous females from the first two litters right from the get go. I'll definitely get another griff down the road one day,,,,great dogs!
On another note, last year in late November we had a meet and greet griff day at Tynehead Park in Surrey and I think there will be another one this year. 10-11 griffs were there,,,,was a lot of fun. It would give you an idea what you'll end up with when it comes to this species of bird dog although I'm not sure how many of the group of dogs that showed up are hunted.

Re: What other breeds dogs do you folks use hunting other then hounds
We should try and organize something for all these hunting breeds. It's a shame no navhda chapter excists in BC. I believe it would be very successful.

It would be great if a NAVHDA chapter started locally... to revive an old thread... http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/showth...ghlight=NAVHDA

Re: What other breeds dogs do you folks use hunting other then hounds
Totally agree. Even if the loca membership was lower than you'd like I'm sure you could gather people from other chapters as well. I ran my test with the southern alberta chapter and I know for a fact they would be interested in helping after talking with them. The breeder i got my dog from is a big part of the northern chapter as well.

I would love 2 see that and would be in 100%. As far as hunting dogs I think a lab is by far the best..

I have a young drathaar and would be interested in the navhda starting up in lower mainland.

Re: What other breeds dogs do you folks use hunting other then hounds
Our Griff is coming out of Montana, seems to be quite a few breeders there. To be quite honest our breeder just happened to have puppies when we were looking. She's been at it for about 5 years, Yellowstone River Griffons. She's been great to deal with. Reading about your experience as well as the guy who has Mater really helped sway us toward a Griffon. They seem to have everything we're looking for, a great family dog and a dog as I describe it "a dog that can take a punch". If you can, keep me in the loop as far as the Griff get together goes I'd like to go. I'm not sure if I'll hunt her but I think I'd like to. Can't wait

I've always thought the interior would be the place. Need somewhere central for the province so people can make training classes on the weekends or something. Lets get the other NAVHDA gthread going and see if this is finally the time ha

Re: What other breeds dogs do you folks use hunting other then hounds
Back to the other conversation, anyone looking at a griffon or a DD should definitely consider a pudelpointer as well. They are often forgot about, but are really great dogs. Highest scoring breed in NAVHDA and make great pets.

Here's a photo of Sako when she was 12 weeks old on her first experience being in a field with game birds. She got to tag along with Mater and her owner in the photo on a pheasant hunt on a torrential rainy day. She looked like a drown rat but she loved it! LOL
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4388/...e21483fc_o.jpg
And here's a photo from our griff get together last November. Sako is the griff laying down in the middle and Mater is the one on the left (her right). As you can see in the photo there are different coats on some of these griffs.

Definitely some with longer hair,,,,likely the ones that have softer coats where the hair could matt up. Griffs should have dense to medium dense wiry coats. The two on the far left had coats more like mine. A good number of those dogs were overweight, as well. No excuse for that. Personality-wise, they're all great dogs.

Re: What other breeds dogs do you folks use hunting other then hounds
I’m a new hunter and new to hunting with a dog. I have a Mutt from a DD and a Lab. She’s much bigger than we expected (88 lbs , maybe 5-7 lbs of extra padding that could come off). She has high hunting drive, and forgivable with my errors as a trainer. Mostly duck and upland. Fantastic family dog and can go all day in the woods.
-
Re: What other breeds dogs do you folks use hunting other then hounds
We've got a Pudelpointer named Bo.
He's got good drive (still needs some training though!) And is a great family dog.
They are a high energy and smart breed. So don't expect to walk them 20mins a day and them be fine.
Edit: I have a bad allergy to dogs. Being hypoallergenic, this guy cuddles up with me on the couch for naps and doesn't bother my allergies one bit!

Re: What other breeds dogs do you folks use hunting other then hounds
Been running Wolf Hybrids for over 30 years.
Last decade or so they have all been at least 1/2 Wolf.
Hell on bears.
Deadly efficient blood trailers.
Cheers,
Nog

I was a houndsman for many years. Loved that sh*t!
i was mentored by a terrific hunter. I chose bluetick cross.
Great times. My advice take it or leave it is to be aware of choosing a quiet dog. If a cat or bear is gonna turn on your dog it will turn quicker on a quiet dog. If you choose a quiet dog be sure you fit him or her with a noisy bell on their collar before you cut it loose. It also helps you find your dog when things aren’t going well. It confuses the quarry and keeps them looking for a tree.
A properly trained hound also makes an amazing family pet. Trust me.
Best of luck!

sorry one more piece of advice. Because a dogs breed states it’s a hunting dog, not all are created equal on the track. I strongly recommend buying fro a line of active hunters (parents /grandparents). It really makes a difference training and in the field.

Re: What other breeds dogs do you folks use hunting other then hounds
I am seriously toying with the Idea getting (importing from Germany) another purebred "German Hunting Terrier" (Deutscher Jagdterrier). Had 4 over a span of almost 40 years. Most versatile hunting Dogs I ever knew and also excellent Watchdogs. Small and Lightweight means easily transported even in small Aircraft also means considerable less Dog food and Dog%$*(&. Absolutely no Fear tracking anything including any Bear and Cat but also Antlered/horned Game.
The negative is there are very few Breeders in North America therefore importing from Germany/Austria/Hungry where the are plentiful is likely the only option.
Would also make an excellent companion/protector for Wilderness Hikers in Bear Country.
Cheers

Re: What other breeds dogs do you folks use hunting other then hounds
Agreed. Wonderful dogs.
My biggest heart ache from my chasing days was losing my hounds. The bigger breeds have a shorter lifespan. Not to sound like a wimp but I still mourn for some of them. The character and humour in a hounds soul is gripping.
-
Re: What other breeds dogs do you folks use hunting other then hounds
Biggest disappointment was buying hounds not from hunting lineage. Way more work and more frustration in the field. However I wouldn’t trade a minute of it for anything!!

For many years there was a German fella running those terriers in revelstoke. Worth looking into!! He had 2 complaints with those dogs (but tons of success)
the little guys had a tough time in certain deep snow and no tongues. (Noise)

Re: What other breeds dogs do you folks use hunting other then hounds
Been a long time but I believe his name was volker goulnik.
-
Re: What other breeds dogs do you folks use hunting other then hounds
Yes loud dogs are good RobU .. well time will tell anyhow tis that time of the season..
-
Re: What other breeds dogs do you folks use hunting other then hounds
No..still mouths are meat dogs.....it is a whole different style of hunting.
I had a good open mouthed dog that would clam up when it was needed...he had brains.
Quite dog generally mean shorter chase.
