2019 Getting Up To Speed (Pic Heavy)
I thought I kept an ongoing thread last year. Guess I didn't? So I'll do a quick synopsis of last year.
I usually plan a week of holidays before or after May Long Weekend depending on which week burns less holidays. But 2018 May Long was a busy one. We started off with a bachelor party at Crooked Lake (Crooked Dick as my buddy put it). I was always taught don't take candies from strangers... well I learned don't take candies from your friends...
"I NEVER MADE A DEAL WITH PUNJABI CLUB"... Star Wars reference...
https://scontent.fyyc3-1.fna.fbcdn.n...5f&oe=5E24B6DA
After recovering from the bachelor party... we made a trip to "Dugan" Lake or Super Secret Lake... for some trout fishing and black bear hunting. I never did find the bear I wanted, but C-Man wasn't so picky...

I had to leave bear/fishing camp early to head down to Kamloops for a softball tournament... I never did shoot a bear last year

Re: 2019 Getting Up To Speed (Pic Heavy)
I have had a nagging feeling about the spot I started hunting mountain goats near Shitters... um, Smithers. But I like applying up "Dink Mountain" for reasons unknown... My buddy C-Man wanted to apply for goats. What better way to start someone out mountain hunting than where I started. Sure enough he got the draw.
Just like me when I started, he didn't really have the gear the first year mountain hunting. He had an Eberlestock Team Elk Pack... so he couldn't really fit everything in his pack. I figured we'd go minimalist as the hike in was not far. If we needed to get more gear, it wouldn't be a big deal. It was early August and everyone said "it'll be so hot, why would you go then?"
Had a cheap Outbound Tarp for cover. I slept on one of those foil window reflectors for a sleeping pad and brought just my sleeping bag liner...
C-Man had a small Kelty +10 sleeping bag and my thermarest sleeping pad.
https://scontent.fyyc3-1.fna.fbcdn.n...00&oe=5E24142C
We got to Shitters (there's an outhouse at the trailhead... shitters... smithers... I love smithers but it's a play on words)
We pull up to the trail head in the dark. Still could find it after 6 years. We slept in the truck... well waited for daylight in the truck. Got our gear sorted one more time. C-Man chugged a pilsner and we were off. C-Man immediately regretted chugging the beer.
Got up to camp and set up. Went for a little glassing session, spotted a good billy. C-Man hated it when I told him it was too late in the day to go after him. We spent 2 nights in the cold ass wind freezing. Never did get a goat, after the second night C-Man wanted to head to Rip Bum to go fishing with his dad. We didn't touch shit, so we went out to Rupert and went halibut fishing... caught my first halibut so that was cool.

Re: 2019 Getting Up To Speed (Pic Heavy)
Somebody put someone's LEHs in wrong and ended up with a goat draw near Terrace, but a place I wasn't overly familiar with, but confident we'd find goats.
My dad put my step mom in for goats in a spot that was pretty rugged. She's not a mountain hunter. Bought newer gear so she would stay warm and comfortable... realizing right away, you gotta suffer a little to be comfortable. My dad was insistent on trying to get quads into where we were going, I told him we wouldn't get them very far. But to be fair, there is an old logging road back there, even though at the end of the day I was right. We walked along the old road quite easily that lead to a mostly dry creek bed. Took a short beef jerky break and my dad spotted goats up the valley. It was already getting late so we started heading back to camp.
Now it took us 2 days to get up to not even Terrace... along that trip, I was being grinded about how C-man only spent 1 day hunting... we spent 1 day hunting for my step-mom's goat. Then 3 day drive back to Williams Lake...
The only shitty part is that once I'm with someone that pulls a goat off the mountain I started on, I'll want to go back and get one of the goats we looked at.

Re: 2019 Getting Up To Speed (Pic Heavy)
Now here's where I wanted to really get to... so my buddy Beer-Rad finally decided that he was over relying on me to feed him wild critters. I've been getting pickier and pickier with the animals I've been killing. So he went out got his CORE and PAL. Then he went out his first day ever hunting with his g-pa and got this tasty little bear
https://scontent.fyyc3-1.fna.fbcdn.n...02&oe=5E2DEAAC
I was a little chapped that he didn't ask me to go out for the first time. But it was his grandpa... so it's all good.
After I got back from my step-mom's goat hunt, I got a call from Beer-Rad and said he wanted to go hunting. He came down Sunday morning and I took him out a little spot that... well... by late morning I found him his first deer.

I thought "well I want a little guy now too..." think I could find myself one? Not even a glimpse of a deer. None the less Beer-Rad had hunted 2 days and 2 critters down. I even made him cut his own first deer...

Re: 2019 Getting Up To Speed (Pic Heavy)
I did have a doe draw last year. I made up every excuse as usual not to shoot one. Too big, too small, too old, too young, too close, too far... which lead me to late season archery.

Re: 2019 Getting Up To Speed (Pic Heavy)
Back in April, I tried talking guys into going to do the sheep count... apparently early bear hunting was a lot more appealing. Only thing we seen was a white tail, a cow and calf moose and... .... oh yeah! My buddy got excited over a "that's a big bear!" and at the end of the day it was a burnt stump...
My brother likes his sammiches... I on the other hand don't like mustard and am too damn picky when it comes to mayo

Region 5 White Tail

This spot, C-Man was a little worried to drive through in his "new to him" Tundra. He says he doesn't like driving through water... but...

It barely came up to his tires hubs... Later that night he went wheelin and swamped his truck and had to do and engine swap.

Re: 2019 Getting Up To Speed (Pic Heavy)
It was April 19th before I even went back out again. My step nephew Brickles decided May Long Weekend was a good weekend to have a wedding. Most of us that go bear hunting/fishing May Long weekend were in the wedding party... not cool Brickles. So my plan was to hammer the same spot for bears any chance I got and get it really dialed in.
Like I said, April 19th me and my brother went out, knowingly very well it was to check on "Dugan" Lake or Super Secret Lake more than anything. We did see a bull moose standing in a swamp. We also regretted not bringing ice fishing gear...

Re: 2019 Getting Up To Speed (Pic Heavy)
It wasn't until May 3rd that I spotted my first bear. Took a little toodle somewhere that wasn't "Dugan" Lake... He was a good bear, but can't shoot the first bear you see in region 5... even though I had my bow in hand with an arrow knocked when I took this picture
https://scontent.fyyc3-1.fna.fbcdn.n...55&oe=5E3D6000
Seen this bear the same evening. He was in with a bunch of deer, neither cared one lick about each other. Nice to have a fence post to make judgement that much easier...

Re: 2019 Getting Up To Speed (Pic Heavy)
So May 5th Beer-Rad (I don't know why he keeps asking me to hunt Sundays... but...) and myself decided we'd see if "Dugan" lake had ice on it or not. When we pulled up, I was excited there was no ice... except on the section of lake I wanted to fish...

Re: 2019 Getting Up To Speed (Pic Heavy)
On the way out, I took Beer-Rad down a little super secret spot I like for bears. We stalked one but it only gave him an ass shot before it took off. Then on the way out came across this chocolately goodness.

https://scontent.fyyc3-1.fna.fbcdn.n...0b&oe=5E1F419D
Beer-Rad had now been out hunting 3 days and has 3 critters...
Beer-Rad was driving on the way out, my plan all spring was to finally kill something with my bow. What gives you more opportunity than spring bear season. Well coming around the corner, here's a huge black bear on the road. I say bear and reach for the rifle instead of my bow... I wanted this bear. Beer-Rad had his bear... why would he stop for a bear? Oh well I didn't get that bear, I have another friend that doesn't like to stop for my bears either...

Re: 2019 Getting Up To Speed (Pic Heavy)
Got out for a lot for spring bears, only really seeing one other bear that I really wanted. I can't figure out how to cheat the system and post videos from FB on here. I usually spend time mixing up locations and only hunting this particular area during a week around May Long. But this year I decided to see if I could get the area dialed in. Seen a total of 48 black bears while out bear hunting this year.

Re: 2019 Getting Up To Speed (Pic Heavy)
So last day of spring bear season, went out for a cruise after work. Packing the rifle... cruising my area, a bear cuts across the road in front of me. Not the bear I want, but it's the last day... so I grab my rifle and head in to the clearing the bear went in. I heard a couple branches snap but couldn't see anything. I started to wail on my deer call. I think most people know the sound of a bear running away through the woods... well it was that sound but getting closer real quick. I pulled up my rifle to get ready. As the bear came into view I squeezed the trigger. All in the smallest split second I thought hang fire? Didn't hear the firing pin? I know it's loaded... then I flicked the safety. I hit the bear, it spun in circles and went into a little hollow where it came from. Now the worst part of all hunting for me. Walking up to a dead bear... no matter how dead it is. Plus I didn't see exactly where it went. It was a short track with no extra excitement.

https://scontent.fyyc3-1.fna.fbcdn.n...9d&oe=5E3D2D09
It was not fun trying to pack this thing out without quartering it or anything like that. Was basically rollie pollie through the burn and mosquitoes.
So far went with simple slow cooked bbq bear shank. Just added all the ingredients of bbq sauce with the meat.

Hammered shaggy manes already this fall and made bear wellington (I know, shouldn't eat rare bear... I'll pay for it later. I won't serve other people rare bear, only myself, even burnt the pastry trying to get it more well done)

Oh yeah did I mention, myself, C-Man, My brother and Beer-Radimus got our sheep draws for up north. Without dragging it out, Beer-Radimus dropped out early, which was nice instead of cancelling at the last minute. I had an idea of where I wanted to go.
There was 'Lake A' which is not a secret, we could set up a pretty good base, hike 4-8 hours (one guy says he did it in 4 with his 5 year old, another guy says him and his buddy slugged away all day... I don't really know) to sheep country. There's for sure sheep there, but everyone knows that and there would be some competition.
There was also 'Lake B' which puts you right in sheep country and everyone knows that. So we knew it would be busy as shit. None the less C-Man started in talks to book a plane with Alpine Lakes air. Now I knew we would be limited on weight, I run 6'2" and 210-215lbs... C-man was at 6' maybe 6'1" and running 220... then my brother... 6'9" 250lbs. Just in bodies alone we're at 680lbs...
C-man came back to the group and said there was 'Lake C'. I didn't think of Lake C because I thought the guides had an exclusive on it. Start doing research on Lake C. Don't find much info on Lake C. No info means the usual, it's a Serengeti, there's nothing there or no one ever goes there. The info I did find on Lake C was "seen some goats and caribou, fishing is good too". C-man talked to someone who apparently guided in there 10 years ago or so...
https://scontent.fyyc3-1.fna.fbcdn.n...4d&oe=5E3CBF1A
Gave my little cousin a ride in my backpack, he was scared to go in at first, but after he was in there he didn't want out.

Info from 10 years ago is a long time in hunting terms. We did all agree on Lake C because how little info there was. Hunting an area to ourselves sounded better than racing other guys for critters.
We all started cutting weight. My goal was 200lbs, C-man's was 200lbs and my brothers was... I don't really know... he can't afford to lose much weight in the first place. But we wanted to get into the lake in 1 trip, and 2 if needed. At the last minute we came to the reality that we would need 2 trips in.
I was trying to monitor C-man's and my brothers gear and food. C-man went on a weekend trip up a nice little hill and my brother has done some rock climbing, but no back country expeditions. Once we agreed to a second plane, the other two kept saying things like "oh maybe I'll pack (insert piece of bullshit gear here)"
I felt like drop kicking most of their stuff out of their hands so they wouldn't bring it. It didn't come to that and they did leave behind most un-necessary gear.
Here's what food idea looked like
https://scontent.fyyc3-1.fna.fbcdn.n...8b&oe=5E343C49
Here's reality of one day food (less mountain house and beef jerky)
https://scontent.fyyc3-1.fna.fbcdn.n...ee&oe=5E378DDD
We did score a deal at the health foods store in town. They had case lots of mountain house tins on sale. We each grabbed a case of MH tins and divided them evenly.

July 29th rolled around, I snuck away from work at 2 that day. We were already loaded and made it to Shitters for the night. Along the way we found the fake Dee Dub in Prince George

Re: 2019 Getting Up To Speed (Pic Heavy)
The next morning we woke to light rain and fog. Wandered down around 8:30 and talked to the pilot. He told us to grab breakfast and then check back in a hour. A hour later we were told to check back at 1. The boss man was flying through the area and would let our pilot know what our "Lake C" was looking like.

The boss finally landed and said our area was good to go. We helped a German family get their gear loaded up as they were doing a river raft trip down some river.

Re: 2019 Getting Up To Speed (Pic Heavy)
With no info on the lake we were going to, it was good old classic google earth. The guide from 10 years ago that C-man talked to said it was good to the south east end of the lake. Google earth told me there was a big valley to the south west with other multiple valleys running off each side of it. C-man wanted to go where somebody got a sheep 10+ years ago, I wanted to go to a spot where we can set up a main camp in a main valley and then spike out to all the different valleys.
So myself and C-man flew in the first trip in case we both saw something that looked good. We hit a little rain but landed with some nice weather. Myself and C-man started re-organizing gear while we waited for my brother. Our plan was to leave some extra gear (salt and mountain house tins, extra clothes) at the landing spot. Within a couple hours, the plane was back with my brother and some rain.

We didn't get dropped off where I wanted, but started up a "trail"... I think it was just where the bears come down to the lake. Anyways, we were stringing up our extra gear in a tree just up a trail. My brother right away said "there's a goat". C-man got my brother to talk him into the goat. The "goat" was a B&C rock, but C-man did spot an actual goat close to the rock. We're 20 minutes from my brother touching down on the lake and we threw our(I guess selfishly my) plan out the window.

Re: 2019 Getting Up To Speed (Pic Heavy)
We ended up going the opposite direction of where I wanted to go. But we found a place to camp. Turns out a kelty 3 man 7 pound(I didn't have to pack it) $200 tent can fit 3 of us... mostly comfortably. Did we set it up and test it before we went? No... did I have my MSR 2 man back with the other gear close to the lake? yeah. Only thing I didn't like about is it was bright green on the inside. Even though it was past shooting light outside, it was bright as shit inside the tent.

Re: 2019 Getting Up To Speed (Pic Heavy)
The fog had rolled in, but C-man spotted a goat.
https://scontent.fyyc3-1.fna.fbcdn.n...8a&oe=5E2E5987
With the fog rolling in and out, the goat laying down, we spent most of the day watching it. We were trying to figure ways to get it to stand up to have a look. At the same time we didn't want to scare it away. So first idea was "we've seen moose in the area already, give it a moose call". C-man let out a classy cow moose call and the goat barely flinched. I stood up and yelled "hey f*ckhead! Stand up!" The fog rolled in, I could barely see the goat stand up, do a 360 and lay back down. There was another break in the fog, my brother made a Comanche war cry and the goat kind of lifted it's head.
It was enough for me to know it's not a goat we should be wasting time on. But I got 2 rookies with me...

Re: 2019 Getting Up To Speed (Pic Heavy)
My brother told me that when he gets back to town, he'd basically be working straight through to Christmas and he wanted that goat. I told him he's not shooting that goat.
C-man asked me what I thought of the goat. I told him "you have a goat draw for dink mountain, the chances of getting a better goat than that is 1000% better" He went on and used Meateater against me saying "Papa Janis says 'don't pass on something you'd be happy with on the last day'" and other things about "I don't need my first goat to be huge". This wasn't going well for me. I was able to get my brother to stand down.
The fog lifted, the goat stood up, C-man baptized his new 270wsm. Nothing I could do now. The goat took a really good tumble.
https://scontent.fyyc3-1.fna.fbcdn.n...45&oe=5E290373
C-man walked up to the goat and immediately regretted his decision. I think he went through all the emotions. The joy of getting his first mountain goat, but the sadness of it not being the goat he would have liked, the disappointment of it blowing it's headgear all to hell. The excitement of getting to try goat meat.
What was done was done. Showed C-man how to do the gutless method, cape out an animal. Guess it was a learning experience for all.

We discovered that we didn't bring any seasoning. Other than salt for hides. We ate a lot of goat meat that week with salt and mountain blue berries. We got some of the goat up in a tree and the rest we were packing with us to add to our house.

I didn't want to keep going to the east, so we broke camp and headed west.

yes it is... kind of fell apart on us after we cut into it. We didn't have red wine or cumin, we also didn't use lung either.
But what was left over, we did sort of a Mr. Noodle hot pot with the rest. Not sure if it was the kidney or liver, but one of them tasted like canned smoked oysters when boiled in the Mr. Noodle broth. Also added some puff ball mushrooms to it... which didn't turn out so well. Tofu texture... barf.

Re: 2019 Getting Up To Speed (Pic Heavy)
So we moved from camp 1 westward to camp 2. Along the way we had intermittent showers. My brother's siltarp came in handy. It would pour for 5 minutes then the sun would come back out. We had setting up cover down to a science.

We camp 2 set up and spent the evening glassing the far side of the lake. We did see a cow caribou come up and over the top

The next day we made the march up the hill to go check out what we thought/hopped was a plateau. On the way up we kept coming across little hollows and areas we couldn't really see too well. So we slowly climbed to the sop stopping often to glass and make sure there wasn't any pockets of sheep hiding somewhere. I did find a cool piece of obsidian... someone must have got it at the gift shop and lost it on their hike?

We watched this basin all day. Like all day. We figured sheep could be bedded down in the rock field below us maybe? Maybe they were on the other side of the mountain and maybe would move over at some point. We never did see anything except across the valley. The sun was going down and the light caught a cow and calf caribou bedded just right. It was easier to see the sun glistening off of them with the naked eye 5 kilometers away than it was to glass them up with the spotting scope.
Caribou tracks for days...

Re: 2019 Getting Up To Speed (Pic Heavy)
I don't know where he idea came from, but it was decided we would pack up camp and head back east past camp one to set up camp 3. It was a whole day full ruck side hilling one way. At one point my brother and C-man wanted to set up camp. I told them to take a look at where they were setting up. It was in a perfect funnel. If a bear was coming up from the valley, it would be directed right onto camp. If we got a down pour, water would be draining right through camp. So we pushed on a little further. Camp 3 wasn't in a terrible spot for camping, but I didn't like it for hunting. Mind you we did have a young caribou come in 100 yards behind camp.

The next day was basically a day off. My brother made some repairs to his pack.

We also went up and around the corner to do some looking. C-man kept wanting to see what's around the next corner. I like his gumption, but we've spent a lot of time moving camp. We're like a dog doing circles in their bed before laying down. We weren't in a good glassing spot, we'd have to keep hiking before we could do any looking. We went on an evening glass up around the corner. My brother did glass up a big ass g-bear in the valley bottom (couldn't get a good picture of it through the spotter). But he was walking through a clearing, there was a lone spruce tree in the clearing the bear was walking towards. Instead of going around, the bear just walked over it.

Re: 2019 Getting Up To Speed (Pic Heavy)
That night we discussed plans. I wanted to go back to our original plan of going and setting up shop in the main valley and spike out the branching valleys.
C-man thought if we just got to look around the corner, it would lead to another basin. Plus we wouldn't have to back track. Plus if we got to the valley bottom, we could cover ground quickly. (I must note that we were way above the valley bottom and the valley bottom was swampland)
Thinking with there being 3 of us, a vote would solve it. My brother came in with a diplomatic answer that translated to 'I'm good to go either way'
So it came to a coin toss. We found a toonie, if it came up bears, we would go valley bottom where the bear was... if it came up the old goat, we'd go back where I wanted to go. Sure enough it came up bears.
I still insisted it was a bad idea. I even wanted to pull the mountain seniority card on the other two. But it was all of our hunt and we let fate decide. The plan was to grab enough food for the day and empty packs to cover ground. Then we would go for a short 6 hour hike just to see. C-man lead the way and basically went crashing through the thick ass trees straight down the mountain. I knew right away that we wouldn't be coming up this way.
This is the mountain we came off of.

C-man was right about it turning into a bowl

I will admit it looked pretty good to me. Since we couldn't go back the way we came, we would just have to keep pushing on. We found lakes with trout in it, we were even going to swim in the one, but decided to have a look at another lake first. I did happen to stumble upon this goat horn (i really should measure it)

It was getting later in the day and we were getting further away from camp. We started going up and up some more and then up even more.
