Ice is finally thick enough, as I walk out 7, 7, 5 and 4" far enough. Friday's fish was 34" 14lbs with a 12" rainbow and a 8" rainbow inside it. Pot bellied pig. Caught and ate a 27 incher wed.

Nice work - that's a fatty! What were you using to catch them and how far down were you catching them? Horsefly lake?
absolutely beautiful..well done TIGGR..
cheers
steven
Well done, he's a tank!
There is only two lakes with lake trout near Horsefly. Pick one!! 50 feet of water on a swimbait attached to a jig you can no longer get.
Anything looking like a kokanee works. Some are fairing well on 3 and 4" silver buzz bombs.
I will wait a week before going back out. Luner mooner is real.

Think these would work Tigrr?
Very nice!!!
Curious, I haven’t caught lake trout, or so long ago I can’t remember.
How do they taste?
Comparsble to Rainbows, better or worse?
Get a new copy of the regs. There are new lakes where no ice fishing is allowed.
Lake trout have more fat/oil than rainbows. But all those omega 3's are good for you. I could eat lake trout 4 days a week if I had them.
Some other lake changes are barbless hooks. Catch 4 get one up to the hole.
Some times I catch fish on small 4" swimbaits and other times they want a 6" white tube jig.
Skunked yesterday.
I'll try and lay out my arsenal and snap a pick. I have them drying now so they don't rust.
If you put a foot ball beside it that would be almost the same shape.
I was wondering if smoked char would work cooked like smoked black cod poached in milk and butter.
My lake trout tackle box laid out drying. I will never waste another lake trout to smoking.

I only fish for rainbows when the water is cold. I don't like the muddy taste they get in some local lakes in the summer.
Thanks for posting Tigrr... so for lake trout, you only jig the above lures ice fishing, you don't typically have success with any bait? Are you focusing your efforts in drop off zones, or just the deepest parts of lakes? Thanks in advance..
I have never used bait here because it is illegal in one lake. And never caught anything with it in the other. Anything from the lake cannot be used for bait in the lake. I value my fishing licence tremendously. We have a no set line rule here in 5. Set lines with bait up north.
95% of the lake trout are caught on 2 lures.
The pic reveal will come later today.
I’m wanting to know about the taste as well , years ago we fished for Lake Trout in Canim Lake once the ice was off . We used Salmon plug lures . I did not like the taste of them but the other fellas did .
Buddy of mine wants me to come fishing in Vanderhoof . I said what species he said Lake Trout , Ah no thanks but if you know a place to catch Rainbows I’m in !
Maybe I need to start a thread on fishing in the Vanderhoof area .
Any ideas on why the Lake Trout did not appeal to me ?
Arctic Lake
These 2 lures account for 95% of my Lake trout.
The other pic is an oh no when it dropped on its lid and 1000+ hooks got mixed together.
Your first taste of lake trout could have been tainted by many things. Too long before cleaning, belly meat oils, heavy red meat under skin and tainted by the oils a person cooked it in. I cook it in its own oils. Skin side down first with a dressing of salt, pepper, onion powder and some times a dash of garlic powder. KIS method.

Good to know thanks Tigrr... with the white lure I'm assuming your mimicking a kokanee or rainbow trout? What do you think the dark lure would be mimicking?
No tube jigs? I never have luck with spoons. Usually 1 rod tied with a tube jig and 1 tied with a swimbait.
Edit: I see you have tube in that other pic

Krippled KC Salmon Spoons
I picked up a couple of these I used the smaller ones for trout but I would bet the bigger ones will worth aswell.
i remember as a kid my brother got 2 40+ pounders using airplane jigs...i stuck to fishing for walleye only
Laker fishing is a lot of fun, when they are in the mood. I fish big tubes and spoons as well as lipless crankbaits. Williams ice jig spoon is a great spoon. A good fish finder is very important. A LOT of fish come in and check out your baits and don't grab them. Lakers can be super picky and will drive you nuts. Lots of fun when you get them on the ice. I try and release all bigger fish. They take a long time to grow big.

I use a 4" Williams Wabler spoon, brass and silver textured finish. Good for Lakers and burbot.
Eating one wild fish same as month of drinking tainted water: study
My buddy sent me this article, it's is more specific to the States.
It sounds extreme and I'm sure there are pristine areas in the US too.
https://phys.org/news/2023-01-wild-f...h-tainted.html
Gee thanks for coming and taking a shit in the thread Wildcatter. Hope your tummy feels better. Welcome to my ignore list.
interesting article, I think it's easy to dismiss the pollution you can't see, but these issues will only get worse with time....and especially fish like lakers that live to old age, I would never eat a mature fish
the Ontario MNR publishes a fish consumption advisory (or used to, don't live there anymore), never seen another jurisdiction do the same but I think that stuff is interesting info to read through before bonking fish
So I share my knowledge on how to catch a fish. I show fish I have caught. I enjoy eating the fish I caught.
Then you come along and post this:Eating one wild fish same as month of drinking tainted water:. Thanks for that tidbit.
Actually it was in the US... Eating one freshwater fish caught in a river or lake in the United States is the equivalent of drinking a month's worth of water contaminated with toxic "forever chemicals", new research said on Tuesday.
Don't get too upset, we are enjoying your thread.
I see in the open chat that Tigrr quit the forum over this "shit" thread? or maybe there was another thread happening I didn't see?
I didn't actually see your last comment, before I made my reply...I just thought it was an interesting study and didn't think it was offensive, just good info for discussion
thanks to everybody who shared pics here, always fun to see successful days on the water and compare tackle...I'll try to dig up some pics later, but for lakers my go to is usually a combo of spoon to start, followed by a jig of some sort if they aren't hitting....it's always fun to watch them chase up the water column
Catching lakers must raise one's sensitivity, will leave them alone for now
