Picked up a new hunting/fishing trailer today
14x7x7 ramp door. No more sleeping in the canopy, keeps my gear and little boats secure and next year when I figure out if I'm going with the 4wheeler, sxs or Tracker, this trailer will haul it.
Now to outfit the interior - I'm going to keep it simple so that I've got the most versatility with this unit. Lot's of ideas to look at on the 'net. Heating will likely be a small propane Buddy. CO monitors, smoke detector and fire extinguish, maybe a couple portable tables and beefy boy lawn chairs.
Insulated, LED interior lighting, Emergent escape window large enough for me to get out of if needed, some sort of plastic coated plywood flooring, 2 spare tires, california immobilizer and awning. Looks good to me.
I'll get it ready this weekend for fishing outing beginning the first weekend of May. Need to wire in a electric brake controller and hopefully the truck winch for my bumper is in. Wouldn't mind a back-up camera for this box on wheels. Actually will likely also make a round bumper/skid for the bottom back end of this unit. I can't help thinking I'm going to drag the back end going through some of the road ditches. Might have to re-mount the axles under the springs to get a bit more clearance. Maybe someone can comment about trailer ride height and if the axle drop is a good idea or not - thanks.
First stop with the trailer was Canadian Tire for a lock set.

Very nice !
Am thinking along those lines too . . .

Re: Picked up a new hunting/fishing trailer today
Looks awesome! Very cool trailer.
Maybe you could get one of those diesel boat heaters or a Pioneer trekker.
-
Re: Picked up a new hunting/fishing trailer today
A set of disc-o- bed bunks might work.
-
Re: Picked up a new hunting/fishing trailer today
I had one. No windows = claustrophobia

I wasn't claustrophobic so much as bothered by an irrational fear of getting locked inside. I was going to install a window to solve both problems but bought a cabin instead. Will be selling a very nice 20' enclosed next month.

Re: Picked up a new hunting/fishing trailer today
The pioneer Trekker diesel heater looks pretty good. I think I'll just do the propane catalytic heater for now - I think that will be enough and it's inexpensive to start with.
The disco bunks look like a practical approach and priced right. The nice thing if I end up with an overnight guest in the trailer, I can place him at the other end of the trailer for a little fart zone protection.
Great ideas guys - thanks.

Re: Picked up a new hunting/fishing trailer today
Nice size, good to see dual axles
Best heater for the task the takes up little room would be a direct vent cabin heater, (amazon.ca Martin propane wall heater) though pricey
Next best would be to snag a used fan-forced furnace from a camper or holiday trailer
-
Re: Picked up a new hunting/fishing trailer today
That Martin direct vent propane does look like a nice low profile unit. Maybe something for the future but 20,000BTU seems like overkill for suck a small space. I'll try wit the little Buddy first to see what I'm really going to need. I expect to be putting on some small 15" truck tires eventually on this trailer for a little better puncture resistance. Good, now I found something else to spend money on but I'll get 8-9 months use per year out of it and then it effectively become a storage shed for the winter.

Nice trailer Rieber ! Sounds like your going to use it a lot .

Re: Picked up a new hunting/fishing trailer today
Nice Unit . Propane heat will make it comfortable for a weekend but longer stays it will start to get wet on the inside of the walls and roof thats what I found with mine and mine is insulated . I found a diesel heater from a Boat used on Craigs list i believe its a Nemar (Spelling ?) wall mounted works great and dry heat as for the Rest its cots and coolers for the summer then its mobile storage for the winter

Re: Picked up a new hunting/fishing trailer today
Looked at something very similar and didn't like the fact that I could be locked inside it. Some form of escape or a different man door closure would suffice. Once I figure that out I will buy one too.

It has an emergency escape window on the drivers side. Lift two red handles and the window unit will swing out. I was worried about the same so this is the route I went. A guy could even install a cargo hatch that's operated from the inside only.

That too. I'd lock the bar so it could not be dropped into the secure mode. I did't like the rain either, the rain inside of course.

Insulate the interior with the foil backed bubble wrap insulation and you don't have the problem, at least that's how it works in a cube van.
Toss the trailer tires and run some real truck tires. Trailer tires are disposable crap in most cases. Or they cost as much as a truck tire.
Interested to see how you kit it out!

Re: Picked up a new hunting/fishing trailer today
I have found L track the best and most versatile for tying things down. It is used on aircraft seat mountings.
I believe Cap-it has it also Google it to check it out.

Re: Picked up a new hunting/fishing trailer today
The propane heat will be wet because it’s not vented. You could put in a cozy cabin propane heater really easy to install and doesn’t need any power. Best prices for the cozy cabin heater is on tiny house.com I just bought 2 of them.

If propane is vented outside there is no moisture to build up. If you are getting moisture it is likely from the cook stove

no kidding......but the 8000 unit would be more appropriate )

How hard would it be to hook up a small vented wood stove?

Not hard at all but it just takes up floor space and then the act of collecting wood. I'm not sure I like the thought of potentially driving with embers that might flare up. Propane or diesel is practical. The unit has vents and windows so there is a ability for air flow. I'm going to try the little buddy propane first - heck, I might not even need heat for the times I'm using this. Well, probably a little heat when it's damp.

Re: Picked up a new hunting/fishing trailer today
I also have a wood stove made by cubic mini called the grizzly it’s very small it’s in my shipping container hunting cabin. Thw wood stove can mount on the wall and takes little space. Really warm and dry heat
witb that probably heater your will be really damp I know from experience!!

Re: Picked up a new hunting/fishing trailer today
Always been a dream of mine to own one of these rigs, once I secured enough funds and space. Until then I'll live vicariously through this thread...

I appreciate your feedback. I certainly don't want a damp box to sleep in. My very first thought about heat was going to be a marine diesel heater and there even was a new unit for sale locally on one of these sites but I didn't buy the unit. I'll have to re-evaluate my plans on this heat issue as I plan to hold onto this unit for the long haul and I want to do things right the first time. Too many have voiced their opinion over the dry/wet heat issue and I would be stupid to ignore lessons learned by others. Thank you all.

Been warned about propane heat due to CO issue by RV retailers in an enclosed space. Electric heat with solar panels and/or small portable generator seems to be safest option.

I had a guy make a wood stove out of a propane tank for me,then I put it in my 10ft camper, now I am putting it in my 8ft camper that I am currently building.
It takes very little wood to keep things nice and warm, a wheelbarrow full will last a week even in the coldest weather, I have been out in minus 25-30 and you are in a t shirt when sitting around in the evening.
Its hard to dry wet clothes any other way, I will never rely on propane again, its damp and if something go's wrong with your furnace then you are ****ed, as has happened to me before.
I never drive with embers blowing around, lol, I do have a cap for the top if I need to use it, never have used it.
My pipe just sticks out the roof maybe 6" when I'm driving, then when I get to my spot I simply add another 4ft section and start the fire, take it down when its time to go, easy peazy, my hunting buddies all want one.
-
Re: Picked up a new hunting/fishing trailer today
338wm - funny you mention the extra pipe stack. I remember years ago driving behind a camper and the guy had the top stack extension on a hinge so that when he traveled he would fold down the top stack section and than somehow secure it along the lower section. I remember thinking, (WTH is this now - double barrel smoke stacks?" Must be a bird hunter.LOL. But this makes good sense.
Plus the smell and sounds of a wood heater provides a degree of familiarity and comfort. Wood is pretty easy and clean - plus it gives you a place to warm a can of stew on.
Chain saw can quickly fill a few boxes of dry wood in a hurry so there's no excuse or need to hunt for wood especially when I'm driving through the dry woods on warm fall days anyways. Yes - wood is probably the way to go.
-
Re: Picked up a new hunting/fishing trailer today
Post pics of the bunks and counters when you get it set up. I am taking a closer look at the 8X16 or 7X14 dual axle.
A friend bought an old $100 camper and used the fridge and stove in his trailer. His wood stove heats it.

Re: Picked up a new hunting/fishing trailer today
Nice trailer! Good potential.
I did a similar thing when I ordered a 6' x 12' x 6'-6"h (extra height to fit a SxS in) spec'd with the following back in 2014: Insulation...cheap to get it done when they are building the unit. The extra clearance Dexter Axle with 15" tires that comes with higher 5" tall spring shackles and raises the trailer to the height of my F350 clearance wise. A 3' wide RV door with screen door that uses an external key lock and a flip lock inside (can't get locked in). It has an opaque window and I would have preferred a tinted window you could see out...didn't know it would come opaque). Two 30"x30" sliding and screened tinted windows...great for ventilation and no claustrophobia). Eight tie downs on the floor to retain the SxS, etc.
Spec was for a folding jack that is out of the way of your tailgate or camper stairs versus the vertical screw jack that was standard. Also rear stabilizing jacks so the unit doesn't tip back when unhooked (also allows you to jack up the trailer to change a tire). I went with rear "barn doors" and use the aluminum ramp off my quad trailer. I did have to add a couple of channels under the trailer to slide the ramp into to carry it...made the channels from steel building studs and screwed them on.
Add-ons that I've done are the addition of 25 of the largest sized vinyl covered screw in cup hooks Canadian Tires (CT) sells inside to hang up clothes, towels, etc. I added a dollar store paper towel rack over the table location. I added an "A" shaped 3/4" plywood deck to the front of the trailer with a few eye bolts to carry gas cans or my Honda Generator if I take a freezer along and want to run it while traveling.
The table is a removable folding unit and chairs are folders with a piece of a Z-lite Thermarest loose on them for insulation. I use one of the magnetic $5 CT LED flashlights over the table as it sticks to a ceiling screw just fine. The trailer came with two inside LED lights, but the truck ignition switch has to be on or in accessory mode to get power to the trailer, so a bit of a pain. I run a 4,000 BTU propane heater to knock the chill off at breakfast as required. Bed is a folding steel framed "Swedish" cot with a foam pad I bought many years ago that sleeps very comfortably.
With the extra height of the trailer I like an external step for getting into the trailer. So far that has been a 30 yr-old plastic milk crate but I need to upgrade to something a bit more durable. Probably fab a decent box for the purpose.
Good luck with it! I like mine!

Re: Picked up a new hunting/fishing trailer today
Sent you a PM regarding diesel air heaters...
I added a 3 inch lift kit to my cargo trailer (Torfelx axle). It's not much of a lift, but makes a world of difference.
Also added a RV door lock and latch for the man door and a fold out step for easy access.
There are so many ways to customize these trailers...Have fun.

Re: Picked up a new hunting/fishing trailer today
Where a wood stove shines is drying clothes but they are messy and take up floor space. A stove big enough to burn through the night, unless it's a very tight, will get enthusiastic and cook you out. Then burn out. The length of burn time is dependent on how much wood you can stuff in. Dinky little stoves are cute but useless. It's tough getting up early when the trailer is cold.
Propane furnaces from campers don't kick out that much heat, only about 10,000 BTU. Drying clothes is slower. And 10,000BTU furnace in camper isn't enough for that November draw. The furnace fans use a lot of juice, as in one night=one battery. So you need to recharge. Fall is rarely sunny, and the orange dot on the horizons doesn't kick out much, so meet Genny.

Any updates?
I'm looking to put (and leave) my 20 foot toy hauler on a piece of property, and was thinking of installing a wood stove. It's got a propane furnace etc...but I'd really like to get some wood fired heat in there.
A co-worker (welder), built me a nice wood "stove" out of a 30lb propane tank. I like it, but it's limited to wood under 8" and needs to be fed every few hours.
-
Re: Picked up a new hunting/fishing trailer today
Mine is a 20 lb tank and can use up to 10", a 30 lb should be able to handle a longer piece of wood.

Mine was built "vertically". Not the right move I'm thinking....
Nice stove you've got there!!

That's a great looking little stove build - nice. Thanks for that. Did you put a little liner on the floor of that stove?
-
Re: Picked up a new hunting/fishing trailer today
Rieber
Not sure what you mean by..."floor"
I put fire board on the floor of my camper with air space, and the walls surrounding the stove I use tin and fire board with airspace. I also use a heavy baking sheet in the front of the stove to catch anything falling out the door when its opened.
If your referring to the bottom of the stove.......Propane tanks are surprisingly thick steel so no worries there, I put a couple inches of sand in the stove as a buffer. I would say to make sure your door is a couple inches above the bottom of the stove so when you open the door embers dont fall out every time you open the door.
-
Re: Picked up a new hunting/fishing trailer today
I was referring to the bottom of the stove. Sand is easy - thanks.

Has anybody converted a snowmobile trailer? I like the height on them. I would love to buy a 16ft all aluminum and dress it up.

Re: Picked up a new hunting/fishing trailer today
Love this thread, keep it coming. I bought a cargo trailer and working on it right now. Does anybody have suggestions for putting a wood stove chimney out the roof or side?

I'm thinking to exit out the side and then have a hinged top section to get the stack draft but then to lower below the roof line so I don't rip it off in the tight bush.
