How to figure out who owns what field?

Any advice on how to figure out who owns what field?

Go to the nearest building to the field and knock and ask is usually where I'd start.

In Alberta/Sask I'm used to having an MD map which lists landowners on it, but in cases where I don't have a map or in BC where I've needed to know, I just drive up to the nearest house/residence and ask.

Knock and ask, has worked for me, here and there.
Seems more folks in Alberia, give permission than in BC.
