German Hunt Terrier Especially if u have 2 or more, the are the Hell on Wheels, Track, Bay, Retrieve,Tree, Den, u name it it will do...

And yes I know for deer dogs need to be leashed. In the first pic we were tagged out and no longer hunting in case anyone wonders

They dont point like a pointer does.
But for deer elk moose bears cats etc they have been used since 5000BC to locate deer. Then keep the animal at bay and wont let it leave so the hunter can get there and shoot it. They bark. I know a guy in Finland who's dog passed its bear hunting trial championship by keeping a grizz at bay for 9 hours. They have special collars with gps and they calculate how many barks per minute. If I remember right it was about 109 barks per minute on average.

so would you need more than 1 dog to hunt deer this way?

In Finland. Norway and Sweden usually only 1 dog is used at a time for deer. Moose or bear

But aren't they allowed to be off leash there to do it. Here, they can't,,,,thy've got to be on a leash if actively hunting. Even if you're tracking a shot deer that is lost you legally have to have the dog on a lead.
