The new maps have topo grid lines and color (green), which is nice, but have smaller scale, which shows less. Wish they would have the older larger scale maps, 1:100,000, with the newer topo style and grid lines. The new ones are 1:250,000 and show fewer logging roads. They are geared towards campers, mountain bikers, etc.Quote:

So are the new ones even worth getting?
Go on Google Earth and look at the area you want to go. Print out area complete with roads and it is in 3-D.
I picked up a map called "guide to forest land of southern vancouver island" in the grocery store in Youbou. It's a little old and may no longer be available but its not too bad for general use. It covers Vitoria to the Alberni Inlet. If your travelling north through chemainus hang a left up the MacMillan haul road towards copper canyon and ask the gate keeper for a Weyerhauser tourist map ($2) this will cover the private lands (you could also try the Timberlands office across from the Nanaimo airport). There was also a Weyerhaeuser tourist map for TFL 44 (Alberni to Carmanah) but with the changes to the companies over the last few years I don't know where you'd be able to find one.
The newest and most up to date maps can be had from the BC Forest Service. Contact your local branch and tell them the area you are interested in. Be polite, and diplomatic and you will probably end up with a map that was updated within the last couple of months. Fred
I am going to still go and look for the Isand backroads map.
