Critics say DFO is burying science, guaranteeing extinction of steelhead
The commercial pink salmon fishery is so important to the federal government it’s willing to wipe out an entire species of steelhead to keep harmful gillnets in the water, say critics.
In emails obtained by the BC Wildlife Federation, British Columbia government staff and scientists say Fisheries and Oceans Canada is burying science and misrepresenting a crisis situation to the public, risking the extinction of Thompson-Chilcotin steelhead trout.

The guys at the Quinsam hatchery told me the DFO won’t let them process steelhead.

Common occurrence.
Back in the day when Hooten ran that show, he shut down numerous hatchery efforts to help.
Most disastrous IMHO was Nitinat. The Manager there had the FN's onside, and they were helping collect broodstock, practicing quick releases etc. When The Hooligan shut them down, the FN's went hard core KILL. Huge mistake!
These days ol' Bob has turned over a new leaf, and is trying his damnest to help them.
Unfortunately too late IMO.
Used to hate that fellow, now guess I can at least stomach where he is coming from...

Not exactly related but i was told by a co-worker that a DFO told him that norrish creek isnt open to salmon fishing because its a part of the fraser. I thought that sounded very odd considering the regulations dont say anything about that. Any insights?

It’s never too late unless there isn’t any brood stock left. The Feds need to pull there heads out of their collective asses and put some brood into the hatcheries. Then dispose of all nets and get everything back on track. A huge increase in chum production for all rivers is essential too as they are the life fertilizer of a river. I’d go back and brood stock fish again if they were willing to try to re-establish our runs.

There are now fewer steelhead trout in the Thompson River system than there are letters in this sentence.

Noggin, I think you know the hard truth.
Steelhead fishery is not commercially viable and DFO doesn't give a shit about it.
That's a fact.
