So opening day is around the corner and was looking at some blinds that have been designed ,all look great but one problem, how can you pack that in by yourself? Great if you have help but between the dekes guns, robo and etc. (food) I have no room left for a master blind .I show the following which is crude but has worked great for the last ten years camo has been updated and excuse the photography. It is a one man show 2 pieces of pvc and tent pegs http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b592/reddog303/iphonepics015_zps0e42bbb7.jpg

Second question how many of you use a camo mask,? Never did until 5 years ago but would not go out now without one ,or black face paint..

I use 30ft. of 5ft. high burlap, they have big rolls of it at Buckerfields feed store. Cheap and light weight.
A couple of cans of camo brown and green spray paint and you are good to go!! Oh did I mention CHEAP!!!!
Cheers----Field Marshal.

in a place like the pic I would be more likely to bring something to sit on and don't move rather then set up a whole blind. If you are set on a whole blind, is prementaliy setting something up not an option( so you don't have to lug it back and forth every outing?)

we use layout blinds and depending on what we are doing rotate them out. For instance if we are goose hunting the dekes are in 12 slot bags that go over our shoulders, we will use a blind that carries like a back pack. i.e ghg ground force, or power hunter. IF we are duck hunting they usually go ina big bag decoy bag that is carried like a back back so we opt to use a sling carried lay out., i.e avery finisher.

I never use a facemask or paint.

Black face paint and a decoy, are absolute necessities for the 2013/2014 season in certain shooting circles...I'm told.

Depending on the situation I use face paint, I just cant stand a face mask, get claustrophobic, I like to use it in the layouts, that way I can keep my face exposed and have a better view of whats going on.

old thread but thought to mention that I use this https://www.huntinggearguy.com/equipment-reviews/bunkerhead-face-mask-review/ easy to set up and it is set up away from your face. I specifically did not like having a mask right on my face and because I use glasses didn't like how my breath would fog up my glasses so I investigated the bunkerheads and got one. Works pretty well and does not interfere with cheek weld when you get up your shotty

Since we are talking concealment... I have Kuiu rain gear but I've totally lost confidence in the Vias camo pattern... rarely do well wearing it whether we are talking deer, elk, bear, moose as it seems to stand out and spook the game. So I have relegated it to just marsh wear in favor to the FirstLite rain gear for all other wet-day hunting.

But today in the field I was head to toe in Vias and even tucked in my layout blind being very still and wearing a face mask and beanie the birds were flaring off. I'm really starting to hate this stuff! Has anyone else experienced this with Vias or is it just me?

Another question... do you guys mix duck decoys in with goose decoys?

I have a mix of stuff but right now use a dedicated waterfowl pattern. Mossy Oak Shadow Blades or RealTree Max-5 are both similar and I have stuff in both. My rain jacket is First Lite in their Fusion pattern that I only bring out when I really need it. I try to be head to toe covered including gloves.

I can't say what makes a difference. In the same day I've had some birds flare and same species make a beeline to my spot without a care. Other times I am standing out in the open gathering decoys and they are circling me - it certainly is bewildering. I just try to cut down on the obvious stuff: stay still, stay down, have the dekes out, have movement. Go out in the right conditions: low visibility, some bad weather, high tide, wind.

And to throw in another variable: individual birds must gain some experience. They see mojos, they get shot at in certain spots, they have narrow escapes, they see their buddies die. Their instincts are bolstered by memory.

These days I pack a bundle of bamboo sticks, burlap and some screening material so that I can at least move a bit. Maybe what I do is cutting down on being noticed by casual birds. Maybe I am only getting the dumb ones!

I have learned from the Prairies that you cannot have any shadowing in your layout blind they must not have an"edge" that being said I used to wear a blue jacket pre camo affordability days and seemed to be ok.Faces are also a giveaway ducks have superb eyesight and can spot any movement easily ,so might not just be the camo...

speaking of face netting, I picked up someone's yesterday at Brunswick. If you left yours on River Rd. well it looks like it's been run over a bunch of times. I may be able to clean it up

I don't wear camo jacket. Just wear a plain old brown hoodie and black tractor logo trucker cap. Only camo is my waders.

I don't use face paint. I just grow a beard for the season and call it done. I'm 40 now so I get a good mix of salt and pepper in the beard so it hides my face nicely and it's warm!

When it's really chilly out I like wearing a balaclava. On warmer days I find they're too warm. This past week has me thinking I need to buy a white one, plus a white toque, as well as a white painter's suit. We were hiding behind a white sheet blind but because you can't see through it at all I'm pretty sure the birds busted us a few times trying to take a sneak peek over the top. We still got birds but the shots were much further than I like. We went through a lot of shells! LOL

Where did you buy the Bunkerhead mask? I tried to buy a couple on their site and it wouldn't take my Canadian address?

Thanks looks like the ticket... I hate having most anything on my face.

@the Hermit. If you go through their main contact and ask really nice they will sell it to you.

I have continued to use it off an on. If I am doing a lot of movement I found it gets in the way and then I take the time to paint my face. If I am sitting still then I have time to properly set it up and then I don't think about it. Up to your style.
