My cousin had a Suzuki quad that had a displacement of 250cc with a hi-lo range transmission and 4X4. It was a real goat. I think that the 250 would be the minimum and definately have 4X4. I know some will say that you can do it with 2X4 but you have to do it with speed and reckless abandonment and that puts a person at greater risk for injury.

Go with a 4x4 quad ,that extra set of gears in the frount make a big difference when you need them. My friend has a 86 250cc suzuki ,he can put it in lock up on all 4 wheels and it has low range and supper low as it has hi range also ,he can put it into two wheel drive also. Have taken out a few elk hole with this quad in supper low lock up ,with someone sitting on the frount to keep the fround down onto the gropund while dragging it out of the bush. hunter 1947.

I have a friend who bought a 335 cc quad instead of the 500, he saved $800. It's a nice little rig, but when we are all cruising logging roads from one area to the next, he has to keep it pinned to do 35 - 40 mph. I think the bigger buggy will last a lot longer and burn less fuel cruising at that speed. Having said that, although the big quads (700/800s) sure can rip, they like the fuel too. I think the "sweet spot" is in the 400 - 600 cc range.

A 500 4x4 is perfect...the bigger machines have so much power that an accidental hit on the throttle with make the machine jump forward...a bad thing in tight spots...

I bought Honda Rubicon 500 this year. It has just the right amount of power and does not consume to much fuel (150 kms on one tank). I previously had a Kawasaki 300 and it was under powered for two up or slow steep climbing. It just didn't have the grunt when needed. Hope this helps.

I recently purchased a new Arctic Cat 400 here in Prince Goerge. I shopped around for a long time and I heard the same thing from all shops. 400-450 are sold by far the most to hunters. I can go all day riding on a tank of fuel (24.5 L). I could be wrong about which one to buy, but the arctic cat realy stood out to me. Plus Howwies Marine was a great group of people to deal with. She has great power, and fuel mileage, one of the better in the bush, what more can you ask for.

Well the original question, whats your weight, what type of country will you be pursueing and the biggest, whats your budget, easy to say 125, 250 , 500 etc.. but as well you have to ask whats the purpose of the machine, workhorse, just touring or bombing around? This question is vague as I could ride around on a 80 without adue, I personally like the big bore 660, it can do it all, don't care about mileage just power and capacities.
If your just starting out, do some research on a ATV Review forum and it will answer many questions and buy something that your riding ability can handle. Good luck!:)

You need to consider that the big machines won,t get around gates or up horse trails . they use a lot more fuel . I ride a 450 my wife rides a 400 and my bud just picked up a 350 polaris with dual suspension and it goes just as good as the rest .Just needs to be 4x4 .

82 honda 250R ! those thing are nut's. i rode one once. went about 100yards down the logging road before i realized that this thing was an angry little gremiln. i carefully turned it around and returned it to the maniac who owned it. but my hat's off to you guy's that own them.
i prefer the foot busting "big reds".

i like my suzuki king quad 300, had it since 95 and it has hauled a lot of firewood and animals out of the woods. gets good fuel mileage. took the warn peice of crap winch off and put a super winch on it. it has over 10000k on it.
