View Full Version : Opening day.....
Ian, my buddy Dan and I went out into the marsh this morning. It was fogged in and not much flying. We scratched out 10 ducks and one goose.
A real mixed bag today with Pintail, widgeon, teal, a woody, and a couple mallards falling. A few good shots by all of us and my dog made some good retrieves.
My Robo battery didn't hold the charge so I'm off to get another for tommorrow. The area around my old "Killer" blind looked to be attracting birds so Dan and I will try that in the am. Ian is heading the opposite way so we should get a good idea as to what is going on around the marsh.

P.S. Ian checked out the water today and said it's not too bad once you get used to it!

Nice woody!!!! I went out today too, out the ladner way though. Was my labs(Remington) first real hunt......he did better than i thought! His second bird was winged and still alive...he balked once and i corrected him so he picked it up(flappin around and all) brought it straight back. great start to the season. Was good shootin first light then kinda died down so i walked around a bit flushed a few and ended up with 6. 4 big greenheads and a 2 teal. But boy do i love huntin with the dog makes me wonder how i ever did without. Keeps me company and i don't have to get wet. Was funny though after he figured it out....i'd flush a few and miss, then he'd look at me like what the hells wrong with you!!!! I wanna go get some ducks!! Think he'll be a good hunter and buddy in the years to come. Good luck in the mornin!
ps.....Do you know if Delta still is no shootin on sundays and holidays? can't find it anywhere in the regs or special area.
Hi guys
We had a good day and came home with a few mallards. Had lots of teal and wigeon in the decoys, but I just watched them land.
Shot one bird three times only to watch it keep flying. It was over the decoys at about 20 yards on the first shot and all three shoots took feathers. It went about 100 yards and then fell out of the sky stone dead. Diesel enjoyed that retrieve.
Getting out was a bit of a slog but it was worth it. The water over there was really shallow and I ended up having to push the boat out to the blind. At least it made placing the decoys easy. Water that is normally up to my chest was only 4 inches deep.
Good luck tomorrow. We will be out next weekend.

And here I thought I took two pictures of the most gracious waterfowler in BC, to only find out when I went to download them nothing!
Thanks for everythign Dan and Old Dan! Had a great time.
You do realize I was just checking the water out to see if that was why the birds weren't cooperating?
Probably see you tomorrow.. I'll be by the beaver house or the second cut if someone is there..

Congrats on the gorgeous Woodie. Shot my first duck in the Ladner Marsh when I was 10 years old, still remember it all too. You and your buddies have a great season.

My buddy and I made it out to Cowichan Bay for the opener. Managed to scratch 2 geese, 3 mallards and a wigeon. Decent amout of birds but there was a lot of guys out there which made the birds spooky.
Many times we were working ducks into our dekes, and it always seemed that finally once we had their wings cupped and making the final approach, shots would be herd from another part of the bay and the birds would flare before being able to shoot at.
All in all a great morning to get out.
