Me & the wife decided we would hunt for some geese/ducks this year, I haven't shot birds in years, I was wondering what a good shot load would be for Can. Geese, 2?. Also I heard when using steel shot (as oppposed to lead) for birds you tighten your choke up by one?

Tighten your choke? 8O

if anything loosen it. steel doesn;t like to be constricted like lead.

sounds good. Do they shoot that different?(lead & steel?) what about range?

use a bigger pellet and a more open choke....instead of lead #2's and a full choke, go BBB steel and mod. choke

Expect 35-40 yards of range on birds. Possibly farther, I've seen it, but I've also seen lots of cripples

Thanks guys, the last time I hunted ducks we were still allowed to use lead, so just wasnt to sure on the steel. The steel is just for migratory birds though & you can still use lead on grouse/partridge/pheasant?

Lead is 100% legal for non-migratory birds. Thank god.

Lead on non - migratory, steel on all migratory.

Ducks - 3's over decoys, 2's pass shooting.
Geese - I've not enjoyed using steel on geese and opted to use a more similar to lead alternative for pass shooting...Bismuth (yes I know it's pricey, but they drop like rocks)....over decoys use BB or BBB. Tip on shooting geese with these large size balls...wait till they pass and shoot them up the rear. You'll have less resistance on penetrating them heavy feathers.

Good Luck.

I just use 1 1/4 BB HV steel within 40 Yards on a mod. choke. The speed counts with steel.

Good Luck! longshot

Use a 1550 FPS velocity shot and #2's will do fine. If using a slower velocity, I'd go with BB's

We shoot tons of geese and I advise all my clients to use number two"s.

I think it really depends on the birds that day. If they are buying it big time to the dekes I use BB's. If something is not right and you can't figure it out I like BBB's and/or T's to reach out that extra few yards and touch them. Also I would use just T's if you are pass shooting.
Or if your wallet allows go to hevi shot. Dead is dead at 15 yards or 50 yards. Just don't miss. It is going to cost about three bucks a shot!

this was originally posted 2004???? hope it was figured out by now. LOL. BTW, nice auto 5. i have one as well but put on a synthetic stock to save the wood. looks like golf course geese.
but i used to use #2's when i was into it and needed lots of finishing off shots.

#2s are great for closer shots, especially when they're decoying under 20 yards. Alot more pellets then shooting BBs so its more of a wall spread out hitting them. I bought 4 cases of 3" #2s and 2 cases of 31/2 BBs, I've barely even shot a couple boxes of the 3 1/2" yet becuase all I've used has been the #2s which I thought I'd only use on ducks but ended up crushing all our geese aswell. My brother got some wicked deals on Heavy shot and besides crushing birds under 20 yards I've seen some fall stone dead after trying to fly away after they've left the spread.

Wingmaster HD. It may cost $4.00 a shot, but when you pull the trigger on a goose that bird is gonna crumple and fall like a stone. Don't have to worry about cripples with this stuff. I've seen a 3" #2 shot drop a goose at fifty yards. The bird folded like it was hit at 25 yards. The price may seem outrageous, but it makes you patient and wait for a proper shot. I doubt there would be as many skybusters if it cost $12 every time they emptied their semi-autos.

What's everyone's opinion on the high-end stuff? I figure if I'm gonna down a goose, might as well go big or go home. Currently I use Kent Fasteel BB's 3", but I want to try the expensive stuff. Any recommendations?
