What calibers/guns do you guys use for grouse?I will be using my Ruger 77/22 if my hunting partner has a shotgun and will back my up. If not then either our Mossberg 835 in 12 gauge or our Benelli Nova Pump in 20 gauge (already taken 3 chickens). And if we are deer only hunting and we have nothing else....then .270win.

Well when I had my .410, I used that, but got a .22 because I found that with the shot gun, no matter how good my aiming was, I found pellets int he meat! CHOMP! OUCH! But ya, a .22 should work just fine.

Old fasion .22 cooey or the quad. They both work!

410 single. Although I did get one with the F250 on the way into camp last week, stupid bird, 5a.m. middle of my lane, 2" fresh snow, stupid bird.

.410 single shot or my cooey .22 which ever is handy at the time.

I choose primative weapons for grouse.... rocks.... any caliber that is not too big to throw. No pellets to chomp on later either. Kinda sporting... gives them a chance to get away even. Almost threw out my arm once, took me 30 rocks or more, my pitching arm just wasn't like it use to be!!

I've got a really cool 14 gauge percussion shotgun that I'll use this year. It was made between 1840 to 1850.

But mostly I let the young hunter I take with me shoot all the chickens. I get more enjoyment out of seeing a smiling kid, than shooting the grouse myself.

All that is avalible around here is the winchester wildcats, they are 40 gr. Should be good enough for ditch chickens:lol: .

Also, anyone try shooting one with a pellet rifle?

410 lately, but in 2004 I got my first with a slingshot shooting marbles. I've previously used a Winchester bolt action .22, a 243 and once, a 7.62x54 R Russian.

Carl

Carl, you don't even have to hit them. Just come within an inch or so of the neck and the bullets passage breaks the neck. Used to do that back east(back when my eyes still worked properly).
And to MichelD, marbles have a very poor B/C. Try round ball from a muzzle loader! ;) Fred

I've used my cheapo pellet gun before with excellent success. Last year I used a 20 gauge. I just picked up a little Marlin 7000 .22, so I'll probably use that next time if I see any... or the 20, that works well.

MichelD
03-27-2006, 12:03 PM
Yes, Fred,

I noticed the deficient velocity and foot pounds distribution and sectional density coeffient of the projectiles when a low shot bounced off a wing and the chicken clucked at me in indignation and flew off. The next time I go to the range I am going to chronograph my marbles, and compare them to steel and lead balls for velocity.

Problem is that I am sighted in for the glass marbles and may have to readjust my sights.

American Eagle. It's ultra cheap. Deadly accurate. I find the hollow points group better than the round nose. 36 grain bullets, I think.

I've tried out them Wildcats in three different rifles and one handgun. Consistantly inconsistant groups, for me. :icon_frow

My beak buster is a CZ (Bruno) bolt jobby.

Ok my next question; What .22's do you use?

Mr.Dean has already said American Ealge, but what else. I have a Ruger 77/22 (the bolt action stainless steel) and all I have been using is the winchester wildcats.

I've been using a Savage Mark II with a Bushnell 3-9x for the last few years, but I'm about to be upgraded to a Norinco JW-15 with a Bushnell 3.5-10 w/ trajectory compensator. (yes, upgraded - the Savage, while adequately accurate for grouse and rabbits inside 30 or 40 yards, has the worst accuracy of any .22 I've ever owned, no mater what ammo I feed it - no headshots past 30 yards.)

bigwhiteys
03-27-2006, 04:31 PM
No... Seriously I don't use my 7MM.

I have taken chickens with Rocks, Truck Tires, Slingshot & Ball Bearing and also my trusty lakefield .22 with a bushnell 3x9.

The ammo I really liked was the "Stingers" I forget who makes them now but they kicked butt in that gun.

Happy Hunting!

Ok well, I think I am going to try and get some chickens this year with my 22. I got a Bushnell .22 Rimfire scope 3-9x40 on my Ruger 77/22, just got it sighted in at the range so good it can hit shotgun shells at about 50 or so yards.

I have a Crossman backpack pellet gun that I've used and a .410 or .22 depending on what I bring for the day. I bought a slingshot last fall and a sack of marbles that I want to try this year just for the fun of it. The pellet gun can be pumped quite high and sounds like a .22 if you pump it 20-25 times.

marcus44
03-27-2006, 11:09 PM
I used to use my 410 shotgun, until I bought my 17 hmr. Great gun for birds. Shot one grouse this past yr at over 100 yrds in the neck. Had to use my binos to make sure it was a grouse :-) Plus it adds a lil more challenge then the shotgun, trying to make the perfect shot to preserve the meat.

My tricked out 10/22 or my CZ452 both are more than accurate. So far I haven't missed a grouse with either of them, if I shoot, they die.

Yeah, I think iam going to just use what ever we have laying around. Wal-Mart in Duncan doesnt carry the bricks (500 rounds), so I have to go to the local gun store and pay $3 more, but anyway....cheaper then centerfire:lol:

I just worked a deal on this site for a .17, had it at the range today, five shot group covered by a dime at 25 yrds. covered by a quarter at a hundred, I though wow I'm good. Gave it to the wife, she covered both groups with a dime. That thing sure shoots. Look forward to takin heads off grouse in the fall.

Well a .22 LR, .410, 12 gauge or a truck door all work just fine. But remember when you are out hunting Moose leave the Grouse alone. A lot of shooting does not help out your quest for a Moose, Deer or whatever larger animal you happen to be going after.

its just the price we pay for living in Canada that we can't carry a .22 handgun while hunting-an old guy I know was from the states and he said that was what he missed when he moved up here.Limiting the use of hand guns to registered ranges pretty much precludes any practical use as far as I am concerned.

I usually use whatevers at hand also, .22, 20gauge, 12gauge, deer rifle. They don't know the difference. Really wish I could use a .22 handgun, that would be one of the most useful things a guy could have in the bush, g$d D#@n gov't. Co-workers in Colorado used to keep one, a Colt Woodsman I believe, in the glove box and we'd sop off on the way back from work and pop a couple rabbits or grouse etc.. Handiest tool ever invented.

.22 rifle...We have a pretty good 20 gauge, but for some reason everybody in my family seems to be shot-gun shy...maybe cause we've all had run-ins with either A) Opa's horrible old 12 gauge that kicks worse than a mule, or B) We've all had the fun of biting into duck, grouse, pheasant, etc. and eating a pellet...either way, .22 seems to be the weapon of choice...or, as of late, a bow with 4 or 6" grouse tips...those are fun I tell you what.

This tread kills me every time it gets resurrected. Some folks on here talk like all grouse are equaland all are hunted in the same terrain, seems all they know is a “road chicken”,makes me laugh. In BC we commonly hunt 4types of Grouse in more different types of terrain than you can think of, howis it one shell or bullet does it all. Oh and some do fly.

I use a frisbee golf driver disc once this year. Wasn't a clean kill, the bird started fluttering around in a circle so I grabbed it and wrung its neck.

[QUOTEthehammer]This tread kills me every time it gets resurrected. Some folks on here talk like all grouse are equaland all are hunted in the same terrain, seems all they know is a “road chicken”,makes me laugh. In BC we commonly hunt 4types of Grouse in more different types of terrain than you can think of, how is it one shell or bullet does it all. Oh and some do fly.[QUOTE]
Well I have hunted Blues, Ruffies, Spruce, Sharptail as well as Ptarmigan from the Yukon to the US border, The Island to the Rockies over dogs using a 12 ga, #7.5 shells, seem to do just fine for all.

If one were to take the same combination posted above they would surely do well on Sage Grouse too by carrying the travel on south of the U.S. border.

As for me, I like a 12g with #6 shot but am flexible/not too picky on the shot size as long as it is not smaller than #7.5.

Funny I remember reading one time you said you us high brass # 6 for blues.

I may have, 6 are the preferred load for some of the bigger birds ie blues and pheasant BUT I've killed a pile with 7.5 upland load and you said "how is it 1 shell does it all". My point was that combo does just fine. So would 6s for that matter. Take your pick either or. if you want to split hairs.

20 Ga #6 for me.
Great uncle used 7.5 in the early season because the birds held tighter.. Then as the season progressed hed switch to 6's.

I have just always bought 6's... When you are Ditch chicken shooting it usually is at a distance. Hunting behind a dog, well i still use 6's ..

I will use 7.5, 8, or 6 shot in that order...depending on terrain and what I have in my pocket at the time.

When wing shooting, I think choke is more important than the size of shot or gauge. I like a cylinder choke or IC for grouse.

Good point Sasq. I use Imp. Cyl. bottom Mod. top shooting the IC first. with my M12 Polly Choke it's set 1/2 way between Mod and IC

Any shotgun with #6 shot gives you plenty of energy for grouse even if it's a longer shot. If you're using a .22, go with a standard velocity cartridge, in most .22s they'll give you more accuracy than a high velocity round and a lot more than a hyper velocity 32 grain round. The CCI Velocitor is one high velocity round that has plenty of snap and shoots well in my .22, but in general the standard velocity rounds shoot tighter groups.

What kind of 22's do you guys use?

All that is avalible around here is the winchester wildcats, they are 40 gr. Should be good enough for ditch chickens:lol: .

Also, anyone try shooting one with a pellet rifle?
Savage Mark II 22 LR 36 gr hollow points that my son will use on the ground and I will be using a Remington 812 single shot 12 gauge full choke 2 3/4 with #6 shot for the wings

I usually can't be bothered unless they are blues but when I do I use a 410 single shot, 20 gauge Ithaca pump or a .22 . I have a new-to-me .22 Stevens Favourite that I'd love to try given the chance.

My son took a grouse off a dead tree laying down in a gully @ 40 yards with a 22 LR this morning then at another spot I shot one 15 feet in the air with a 12 gauge 2 3/4", #6 single shot full choke shotgun this afternoon. A 22/410 combo would be perfect if you are by yourself. There are a wide variety of options that all work fine. I like the way my son and I hunt them with our combo, tons of fun!!!!

My old eyes are missing too many grouse with the .22 so got an old topper h&r 12ga totally refinished with cold blue, some stock repair etc. but the neatest thing is I cut the barrel down to24 11/8 inch with a Ridgid tubbing cutter( worked like a trick), then I got a case of 4 Winchester shotshell boxes #6 shot, from Walmart for 20 some bucks, the gun handles great, kicks like a nightmare, patterns good at 40 feet and somehow the birds got word of it and I haven't had a fair chance at one for three years .... So yeah, 270,300wsm, 300 savage, .22, schmeisser 9mm, or anything should be good for grouse, I tied a rigomortis rat up by its tail against a styro panel and shot it at 30 feet with a .22 bird shot, I think # 12 shot and you know it penetrated the stiff rat completely and went into the styro 2 inches, you could try that.

Like I said mostly 12ga. stevens sxs now. But some of the other comments reminded me of some of my early grousing as a kid. Had one run into the rock that I had thrown at him it was going to miss him by yards, another time I got 6 bird's with a two foot stick that never left my hand. Was going to get more until my dad called me off, said leave them alone leave some for seed. Some of my fondest memories as a young hunter involved grouse hunting, I think why they were put here was so young guy's or gal's can have some success on some of their first times out.

I use my 22 Anschutz or my 20GA CIL. Pretty happy with either one. A lot of the time, the grouse do their very best to either help me shoot them or to jump right in front of my truck.

I've really lost interest in grouse, unless it's a blue. Not enough juice for the squeeze.

But to answer the question; it depends. I have a Cooey 410, an Ithaca 20 gauge or an old Winchester bolt action .22 and a Stevens single shot to choose from. The 410 has been the best grouse getter by far.

Rocks, sticks, rolls of flagging tape, paint cans, a DBH stick, a handheld radio, the front diff works good, a hard hat once, even kicked on once, and sometimes a .22. The 12 gauge (only cause that's what I have) when im feeling like stacking the odds and taking the sport out of it! ;)

Latest is Remington 597 hb 22 lr..still in the arriving stage..well loved Leupold 2x...7x 33mm will sit on it , weaver bases..and whatever rings Nechako suggests..have a few additions. .mcarbo hammer spring and aluminum bushings, Volquartzen hammer and ejector..
Perhaps by opening of bunny season I can have Ebony primed for grouse.
So many folks behind this project really wanted the Volquartzen..but Abercrombie and Fitch taste on a Costco budget lol.
Im expecting half inch groups..sighted in at 50 yards..havnt a fuzzy notation of ammo yet..
But it should be a grouse..bunny gooder..

Ive used my hand before and my boot once and a few rocks. but shot them with 10 gauge duck load, 12 gauge loads, 16 gauge loads, 20 gauge loads 28 gauge loads all the way down to 410 loads and 22 to 30-06 and 45-70 to 44 mag, bows and slingshots, this year ill add flintlock rifle to that list, and if i ever manage to pry the 100 year old double barrel muzzle stuffer that is roughly a 20 gauge, and get it checked out, i would love to kill some chickens with that. through vast amounts of "research" I have come to the conclusion ditch chickens are not hard to kill pretty much anything will do the job. but any real upland bird, (as in one that is afraid of people and tries to fly away) takes a real gun. my all round bird choice would be a 20 gauge O/U, light and points quick, but just picked up a little badger in 22 mag, ill throw a red dot on top and some paracord to make it look more like something you like, not something that fell out from underneath the car in front of you ha. see how this season shapes up.
