i managed to blow his neck clean and lost his beard in the process. i shot him at 10 yrds just as he crested the bank.

maybe thats the oldest turkey in BC and hes gone grey????
On another note, the beard attaches to the chest, not the neck!

i dont quite understand how you lost his beard. unless you shot him right in the chest.
way to go on your first turkey, it looks pretty big.

That right there thrills me to no end. Getting your first turkey made my day. I just come home form a one week turkey hunting trip with a novice turkey hunter and have a lot of catching up and deadlines to meet. Report will follow later when I have more time. Thanks for the kind words.

As for the grey turkey: It is a fully mature bird and should therefore not have such a badly torn up tail. This makes me think it might be a member of an escaped domestic variety.

As for shooting the beard off on your Jake. It happens faster than some may think, especially at close range and holding a little low. The beard does not grow out of the chest. The beard is located where the neck changes into the chest, right between the "wishbone".

Next time aim a little higher right about in the middle of the featherless neck and a little higher at close range. regardless of that it is a job well done.

On a side note, the beard is somewhat important!!!! Your required to leave it on until you get home as proof that its a legal kill!
"my friend" fully skinned one out one year, and packed it on ice as we were camping, and it was hot out! Fortunately we saved the beard, wings, and tail feathers as a novelty.
We got checked by the CO and issued a warning, he said it was a pretty common mistake as we were all new to turkey hunting a few years ago!

Mark, maybe you care to show us this required proof of kill? . Its not in the synopsis under possesion and transportation. Any game bird taken in BC requires only 1 wing, attached with feathers as proof of kill.

Looks like a domestic turkey to me, but i dont know much about wild turkeys.
I have seen a few grey turkeys on farms but most farm turkeys are white or brown.
maybe its a wild/domestic hybrid

A legal turkey MUST have a beard to be legal and I would presume the beard MUST be there for proof that it indeed was a bearded turkey..All toms and jakes do not have beards and I believe some hens even have them as well..

I seen a Tom this year that was gobbling up a storm and strutting his stuff with some hens and he had no beard, even though it was a Tom. I guess when the regs say BEARDED the beard must stay with the bird?

No where does it state, that the beard has to accompany the bird. One wing with feathers for transport. Under open seasons, it says that a season is open for "bearded turkey" or "any turkey". You do not need that as Proof. Read your post. It does not make any sense.:?.

Daryl, most hunters would bring there harvested turkey home intact. I don't think they would process it in the field as it has to have (one wing attached with feathers). This beard issue is for ID in the field and nothing more...:-|

I know where you have been hunting !!!

I talked to the guy who brought in the turkeys. His neighbour had domestic birds and they got out and bread with the wild flock. He says that he now see black, white, and grey turkeys.

Personaly I would have shot that grey tom in a second if it was on a gravel road and safe to do so. Like I say "any turkey in BC is a trophy". But this one would have been very special.

Nice jake for your first tom. Bet ya can't wait till next season. Othmars class at KFG was great.
