Well we did it !!!

Dad & I got our opening day tom. This was a "shared" hunt for us. We went out and got him together.
First light we heard a couple of gobbles way off so we set up and started our calling. We only heard one more gobble and some hen clucks but that was it for 3 hours. So we pulled up the decoys and went to our next spot. But another truck turned in right after us, and followed us all the way to the end of the road. Not nice !!! So we then decided to go up the vally to a new place we never tried.

Here is where "fact" & "fiction" go in different directions. I'll let you decide which is the better story.

While driving down the road (slowly stalking our pray) I see 3 turkeys beside the road (after hours of hiking we see monster turkeys). I yell (wisper) to Dad get out and shoot that tom (I guide Dad into position). The tom & 2 hens walk off the side of the road behind some trees (as fast as a moon rocket the birds start to run). I ask Dad if he wants to shoot (Dad rips the mighty 12 guage from my sweaty hands). The tom goes into full strut (the tom goes into full strut) with the hens close by (by now the hens are not to be seen). Dad raises the shot gun (Dad falls to the ground after I steal the gun back). The tom looks back only 25 yards away (now he is over 200 yards away). Dad pulls the trigger (I pull the trigger). Our tom is down (after blasting 3 magnum BB shells he's down). I say "we got him" (I say "I got him"). All in all a fun hunt. Thanks Dad. I owe you (you owe me).

The tom weighed 15lbs and had a 7 7/8" beard. No spurs !

Awesome job, 300H&H! All that preparation, scouting and research paid off big time. Great photos too! Good luck getting that second Tom - this time it's gotta be with that crossbow.

Just seen that. Belated congratulations on your tom. It's a beauty. Not uncommon for a mature tom to have a long snoot 3 1/5" is a bit on the long side but not the longest I have seen. On the other hand I have never in all my years seen a mature tom without any spurs. You have a very rare beast indeed.

Keep it up and the best of luck for second bird.

Thanks Othmar. Dad & I will be out this weekend. Work got in the way this week and the weather did not help.

I enjoyed your talk at Kelowna F&G hosted by Grouse River. It helped. Looking forward to next years.
